Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

well if you need a challenge you could try installing a working pptp client or ooxml support for an office suite or what about sound in flash on x64 or get KDE to shutdown when using SLiM or perhaps figure out how to use an external monitor with the laptop lid closed, and what about using KDE4 that is a challenge all in itself better yet with compiz instead of kwin. you could try to run a citrix client on arch64 or virtualbox on arch64 with a usb supported windows client to sync an ipod, well you get the picture here.

Arch is very stable for me but there are *always* challenges enough to tinker with.....

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

Yeah that's been my problem with Arch as well... I browse, I edit text I create some spreadsheets .. I watch movies, I fullscreen some flash documentaries I play WOW.. I code some Python.. and I never get any errors... sad

I think Arch may be the only system I've ever used that has never caused any problems.. heck I even forget about the OS I'm using it's so much in the background...

Even the IRC channels veers off topic so often because of the lack of people coming in with any Arch related problems...

Let's hope that Arch remains this way smile KISS

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

Have you tried automating daily backups to a USB drive that randomly unmounts by itself and takes an average of 5 tries to get mounted right again? You get interesting stuff like

This does pretty well to keep me busy these days. And lack of disk space always results in such interesting behavior 8D.

You can also simply keep trying new software all the time. As a good example, figuring out how to get the config documentation for awesome3 when I switched to it took me a nice whole week on head scratching.

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

Fellow Arch users.

Thank you all for your comments and helpful suggestions. Whilst I really appreciate your input as to how one can make Arch more 'exciting', the trouble remains that these approaches are deliberate exploits and in no way rectify the underlying faults of Arch i.e. transparency, configurability and, most tellingly, useability. Trying to do any of the above tasks on any other distro or OS would be equally disastrous or - worse - impossible. Kind of like saying that in order to make a Ferrari drive more roughly, you ought to drive it offroad.

Orasis, it's exactly your experiences that I'm having, and it's disconcerting. At this rate, I AM forgetting about the OS and may actually be forced to do some real work on the computer rather than fiddling about with it. As a chronic procrastinator, this remains unacceptable.

It's a good thing there are such forums to post to. Or perhaps the MGB needs something tweaked on it. I'll go and check while pacman updates....

This has got to be a joke. My laptop runs flawlessly and that's how I like it!

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

It isn't boring when you run a 7 year old bottom-of-the-barrel dell tower as a proxy/dansg/httpd/ftp/mediatomb/bzr/merc/ssh server! That will spice things up. I saw a tower like mine on ebay earlier for $50 (5 minutes left at the time). That was without monitor. But who needs a monitor that can only go to 1024x768 anyway?

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

I'm still looking for an Arch Linux setup I must really tinker with. I have tried several Desktop Environments, but with each I was done within 10 minutes (fresh installation). Since fixing problems on my Windows machine used to be a 24/7 task I now have spare time. What am I supposed to do?!

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

love this thread smile

I'm missing troubleshooting so badly after installing Arch, that to beat the withdrawal symptoms, I'm building packages from svn and filing bug reports. On the other side,  I will shortly start spending more time doing actual work than fighting the OS.

Think of it, KDE 4.2 better have regressions and be buggy else I'll be.......

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

if you want a real challenge try helping me get my static wifi working:http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56153
honestly thus far to me all of this upheaval of how arch is the most beautiful thing on earth is rather bothering. threads like this one(http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=12926) are rather embarrassing too, what distro self inflates its self like that?
Arch has its moments, and very well intended idea...

but as you can see it spots shortcomings...

personally i could write a thread saying the opposite to what you did and i would actually mean it.

just wanted to bring this to everyone's attention,
Arch is not heaven.

Course not, its what you make it. Apparently for some, that's heaven.

Re: Arch is boooo-ring!

If you really want fun, try to get a Windows box, do registry fixes every day with a poor quality registry cleaner and try to download every virus known to the Symantec database. Or just rm -rf your whole drive, it works wonders.
