I am running arch on an averatec 1020, and have been having problems similar to the eee users.
I too have been getting:
ACPI: EC: GPE storm detected, disabling EC GPE
which I may think is related to my brightness/monitor toggle keys taking about 2-3 seconds to apply. Which is pretty annoying, especially when trying to find the right brightness level.
The fan stops working for no reason...I originally thought it was 2.6.26 so I rolled back my kernel driver. (First time I noticed it) I was running 2.6.25 happily for about 5-6 days when I realized one day that my processor temp was 77C. I am not sure what is causing the fan to never turn on, acpi still works as it is reporting temperature, fan just never starts. Not really sure how to search for an error. I have since gone back to 2.6.26 where the fan is normal for a while...maybe a few hours than randomly comes back on.
acpid fails (i can't start it)
tried installing lm_sensors....but no sensors detected
My laptop hasn't really ever reported fan control as far as I know. Have lived happily without it....though I atleast need the fan to turn on when it gets hot.

I don't have any insights about the cause of your problem but I'm having a similar roblem with my fan. While waiting for a permanen solution, I make do manually restarting the module:
sudo rmmod fan && sudo modprobe fan
which starts the fan up again (for a while).

Hm, I tried modprobe -r to no success.....ill try rmmod.
