Hello, after I upgraded to Catalyst 8.8 I experience the XV- and 2D rendering to be very laggy first when XV is beeing, and even after I closed MPlayer, the 2D rendering is still laggy for a little while.
Anyone found a workaround for this?(yes I know it's not a long time since this driver was released).

Yes. I have issues with xv as well with catalyst 8.8 and Radeon HD2900Pro . When I play movies they tend to freeze for a second or so from time to time. Hope this issue gets resolved soon. Everything worked just fine with 8.7.

I'm not sure if this is the exact problem you're talking about but try adding "nopat" to your kernel line in Grub. Mine looks like this now:
ktitle Arch Linux
root (hd0,0)
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk vga=791 ro nopat
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
This fixes a pause I get every few seconds with the new driver.

I'm going to give this a try too. Out of curiosity, what does the "nopat" entry do?
EDIT: I don't know what it does but it fixed it for me too. Thanks Luciferin!

Answering my own question:

It fixed the issue for me too. However I feel that this workaround should not be considered the permanent solution and the driver should be adjusted to work properly with the default kernel configuration.

That would be ideal. Hopefully, ATI won't wait to fix this because not everyone is going to know how to fix it.
