mutt: mailboxes vs. imap_check_subscribed

I'm making (yet another) tutorial on using mutt with Gmail over IMAP, but I'm having trouble discerning the real purpose of imap_check_subscribed.

The manual states that setting this variable will check all of the subscribed mailboxes for new messages upon startup.  However, my tests have shown that all declared mailboxes are checked for new mail even when this variable is unset. For example:

unset imap_check_subscribed
mailboxes +INBOX +arch-dev +arch-dev-public

When mutt is launched, I still received notification that I have new messages waiting in the folder 'arch-dev-public'.

Could anyone shed some light on this?
