I recently did an Arch core install and wanted to get a GUI working. I installed X and proprietary NVIDIA drivers but whenever I try to run the Xorg configuration I get the following error(s):
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.8.log", Time: Mon Aug 25 14:58:13 2008
(++) Using config file: "/root/xorg.conf.new"

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:

Cannot connect to X server.
I'm not sure why it can't find this module file. I used automatic hardware detection when I was installing and it still wasn't able to recognize the screen. Any idea where to go from here?

I'd suggest running "pacman -Syu" before proceeding further.

I reinstalled the packages and updated the entire system but it makes no difference, still get the same error.

What does does
ls -l /lib/modules/2.6.25-ARCH/
show ?
In my system modules.dep is owned by the package kernel26 2.6.26.2-1 (thats the version I am running,
but that shoulnd't matter).
Can you reinstall or upgrade it ?

Run command as root:
depmod
This will create /lib/modules/2.6.25-ARCH/modules.dep file.

Alright thanks for the info everyone, I'll try this later and get back to you with the results.

Well, for one, if you updated, you shouldn't be using kernel 2.6.25-ARCH, but 2.6.26-ARCH. Be sure to reboot.
Offline
Well I updated and rebooted but now all my partitions are messed up and the system can't start properly. Does a kernel upgrade overwrite the /etc/fstab or something?
Offline
No, it doesn't overwrite fstab. Everything should work properly, unless there's some hardware problem (failing disk?).
What errors do you get?

Did you installed the NVidia driver from the NVidia site or the repo?

I used the repo, is that a problem? I installed the "nvidia" driver, although I have a very recent card and I heard I might have to use the "nvidia-beta" series...not sure about that.
As for the partition issue I fiddled around with some stuff and restarted, it seems to be back to normal. I haven't tried setting up Xorg again yet to see if depmod works. Could this be a driver issue, then?

What card do you have?
Offline
GeForce 9800 GX2
Offline
That one should be supported by non-beta drivers.

I guess I'll just try depmod then. Is there any advantage using the beta drivers with newer hardware?
