[SOLVED] major problem with both xfce & gnome

hi all,

just installed arch for the first time a couple of days ago, everything seemed to work fine at first.. but i've now installed gnome and xfce4 and am having problems with both. when i log into either, all icons and text are invisible. panels and menus are blank.. all there is are lines where the text should be. i've searched up and down but can't find any similar problems on this forum or any other. does any know what might be causing this or have a solution?

any help would be appreciated

thanks

Hi.

There may be a problem with your xorg configuration.  Have a look at
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.

Re: [SOLVED] major problem with both xfce & gnome

hi tigrmesh,

thanks for the response. i've had a look through it and there doesn't appear to be any errors. i used "Xorg -configure" to create /etc/X11/xorg.conf . i also tried copying the xorg.conf from ubuntu (works fine) over to arch and its the exact  same problem. not sure if it's a problem with gtk as twm works fine (font is visible in titlebars and terminal).

Re: [SOLVED] major problem with both xfce & gnome

Every time I see an odd behavior in xfce it reminds me of a problem awhile ago. http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/9465?pro … r2=&sort2=

Don't know if this will help but if permissions are wrong on your /tmp directory all sorts of wierd stuff can happen.

Maybe there's a problem with your xorg configuration.  Have you looked at the wiki page for xorg?  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg

Re: [SOLVED] major problem with both xfce & gnome

thanks for the reply.

okay, i've read the page carefully and had a look at my xorg.conf and everything seems to in order. i'm not sure thats the problem as the fonts show up fine in twm (in the xterm and titlebars which it doesn't in xfce or gnome)

has anyone ever encountered a problem like this before?

any more help would be appreciated

Re: [SOLVED] major problem with both xfce & gnome

okay it looks like the problem was with the intel video driver. i enabled the testing repository and done

pacman -S testing/xf86-video-intel

and now everything is fine smile
