I'm currently running Arch with all files in one partition. (Except for swap.) Now I'd like to move /var to its own partition, without reinstalling Arch. What's the best way to do this? Is it as simple as booting up a live CD, moving all files and directories in /var to the new partition, and modifying Arch's fstab to mount /var there? Are there any gotchas?

Basically yes -- just make sure that you preserve the permissions and such when you're moving the files.

I have /var/cache/pacman on a separate (ext2) partition, and let the rest of /var sit in / (reiserfs). Create the partition with the "N=" parameter, I use 4K or 8K, and fsck's aren't a hassle.

Thanks guys, it seems to have worked. For good measure, I made the new partition reiserfs.
