[upgrade] What will happen

...... if I install a package (let's say fvwm2.5.X) while I have installed the same (or older) package from the source (without abs)? I installed that package because I wanted to give it a try, but now I'm really addicted to it and I wouldn't want to lose any important files.

Ofcourse, I can make backups of it but, I'm curious to what will happen if this situation occurs.

Re: [upgrade] What will happen

if i understand right, you have fvwm installed from sources and want to switch to the pkg instead?

i haven't used fvwm about 2 years ago, so i'm not 100% sure - any settings are saved (that's generel unix style) under /home/your-user/.app/, so they will not be overwritten

what you will see, when trying to install the pkg is that it tells you that it conflicts with some files already in your system - this you can force or clean by hand and try again

Yes, indeed.
So it will conflict if I try... hmmm
I guess I can better remove the package by hand than forcing to overwrite, right?

Anyway, thanks for your swift response 8)

Re: [upgrade] What will happen

it won't necessarily conflict. if you have the source configure to default to /usr it will if it is to default to /usr/local then it will not conflict.

At the same time, having two different versions installed at the same time isn't usually a good thing.

if you can remove the src-pkg by hand easily, it's better than forcing, because some files will stay in the system, if dey do not confilct and are then not overwritten
