Wireless not working

mad

Hi,

Firstly sorry for my bad English (still learning!).

I install Arch Linux yesterday and can't get wireless working.  My wireless card is: Atheros AR242x.

ath5k module detect wireless, but doesn't work- says to check timeout and security settings.
Try Madwifi (!ath5k in rc.conf), install OK, but no ath0, wlan0? Only get wlan0 with ath5k module.  Even modprobe ath_pci & ath_hal still no wlan0 or ath0.

This make me crazy!

Re: Wireless not working

update:

just tried latest madwifi package from AUR.  Compile and install OK, but still no wlan0 or ath0.

wlan0 only appear when I enable ath5k module.  Maybe I try Slackware instead of Arch?

Re: Wireless not working

What are you trying to connect to? It sounds like the ath5k module found your card and enabled it properly, it just needs configured properly to connect to your network.
What does iwlist wlan0 scan give?

Re: Wireless not working

OK, I uninstalled Madwifi, disable ath_pci, disable ath_hal, disable wlan (all of these say FATAL: module not found after remove madwifi).

Then I do:

iwconfig wlan0 essid JACQUI
iwconfig wlan0 key s:xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Then iwconfig shows:

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

wmaster0 no wireless extensions.

Re: Wireless not working

Seems like you need the latest snapshot from Madwifi, because the latest stable release doesnt work with this chipset:

http://forums.opensuse.org/network-inte … ution.html

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=756318

Zl.
PS: there is an SVN-version of madwifi in AUR, but it has not been updated to kernel .26 (I flagged it out of date) - I think you can just modify the PKGBUILD to reflect the newer kenel and then build and install the AUR-package.

Re: Wireless not working

Already tried that.  I tried again just to make sure and it doesn't make any difference.

Still same results when I load ath5k, ath_hal, ath_pci and wlan

MODULES=(8139cp 8139too mii ath5k ath_hal ath_pci wlan snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-hda-intel soundcore !pcspkr)

What am I doing wrong?  Is it this kernel 2.6.26?  I see many people have problem with 2.6.26.

I've spent 12 hours total try to get wireless working and am ready to give up, or just pust Windows back on!

Re: Wireless not working

Try kernel 2.6.25.

This seems to be a problem with the 2.6.26 kernel.  I think you should give up and try 2.6.25.

Re: Wireless not working

No, didn't work.

Maybe it is just my card.  AR242x sucks.

Nobody has any ideas?

Re: Wireless not working

Can you possibly try a PCMCIA card?  You can pick one up on eBay for under $10.

You will find that your current chipset is probably a AR5007EG, not an AR242x.  There are numerous chipsets that seem to detected as AR242x.

Re: Wireless not working

try netcfg instead. it's got some workarounds that might work for this. Try the one in [testing] and have a look at the QUIRKS documentation on the wiki (under Network Profiles)
