Fatal server error:
Caught signal 11. Server aborting

I am currently up and running with the radeonhd driver, but I would really appreciate any help, because it lacks certain features and also makes the card run hotter than catalyst.

It shouldn't be caused by a wrong xorg.conf, because I removed basically everthing which is not absolutely necessary and retried without success. Anyway here is my xorg.conf:

I have just stuck a 4850 into my system and I am having problems too

you tried using aticonfig?

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

If you mean that I should generate a xorg.conf file with aticonfig, I did just that and the same error occurred. I am pretty certain that it is not a wrong xorg.conf file, because it worked with the old kernel 2.6.25 and catalyst 8.6.

Hmmm: Maybe it is the dual screen setup, i will try that tomorrow. smile

After rebooting its seems fine, running catalyst 8.7 here

Have noticed my Arch logos are green while booting up.. :-)

Is there a gtk front end for ati cards as there is in Nvidia?

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

Same here.

I have Radeon M100, so radeonhd driver won't work. I have to try something, but I can't start the system, because KDM is crashing (propably beccause X is crashing.. )

When I'll remove fglrx from modules in rc.conf will I be able to run aticonfig ?

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

there is something about ati and kdm in wiki page on Ati .... check that out first....

No reason why you should not be able to run aticonfig

Mr Green: before that update there was no problem at all. I'll look at wiki, but nevertheless X is crashing

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

I just tried it with a single monitor configuration, but the exact same error and backtrace occurred.

@Mr Green:
Could you post your xorg.conf so i could try it?
edit: Are you using arch32 or arch64?

@radmen:
You could always boot the failsafe kernel and run aticonfig from the console, or press ALT+CTRL+F1 to get to the console after X crashes.

Edit:
Seems to be not arch specific:

draugdel: do You mean the Fallback kernel ? There's the same issue, but I forgot to try ALT+CTRL+F1 .. Will try it later

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

Just tried with your xorg.conf but it doesn't make a difference. I suppose it is a problem related to the necessary patch for catalyst for the new kernel and the x86_64 architecture. I am probably going to wait for catalyst 8.8 because I should get some work done now. wink

@radmen: Yeah, I meant the fallback kernel. If the ALT-CTRL-F1-method fails you, you could also boot the arch live cd and chroot into your install to be able to run aticonfig.

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

Hi seems like I am not the only person anymore having problems with the HD4870.

First Arch64: If you got 4GB RAM or more there are 2 common problems.
The first seems to be connected with the new Intel P45 chipset.
(A friend of mine has the same chipset and the same problems)
I got an ASUS P5Q and if I am trying to Boot from the X86_64 CD 2008.06
I only get dropped to the GRUB commandline and I can only reboot.
Solution: Use the 2008.03 FTP CD. Works for me

Now to the useless catalyst. On my P5Q the Kernel Reports on Booting that the
MTRR is fucked up (only happens if you are useing atleast 4GB RAM)
Well and it looks like the the Catalyst driver is useing the MTRR settings anyway
even after the kernel reported not to do so...
So the only thing you get is a Black screen and you can hit the reset button
(No Ctrl+Alt+F1 working, but no kernel freeze SSH is still possible)

The fix for this comes from the Phoronix.com board.
You have to rebuild the /proc/mtrr by hand.
For my configuration (4GB RAM and 512MB Graka it looks like this:

# MTRR FIX *ASUS BIOS-BUG*
echo "disable=0" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=1" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=2" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=3" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=4" >| /proc/mtrr

echo "base=0x00000000 size=0x80000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x80000000 size=0x40000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0xc0000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x100000000 size=0x20000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x120000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr

just paste the lines to your /etc/rc.local and X should start.

Unsolved problems for me:
First some words to the VESA driver. The VESA driver works flawless
even without rebuilding the MTRR. And is the only driver I found for the HD4870
where the Windows are not lagging. But I were not able to get the driver to 1680x1050,
but the biggest problem is that the driver does (logicaly) not support Power Play 2.0
so the card is noisy and takes a lot of energy (not acceptable and even changing the BIOS of
the card wont help)

Next the current xf86-video-radeonhd-git. It got basic HD4870 support and seems to run stable.
But once again it does not look like Power Play is working or any BIOS setting have effect on the
card clock rates.

So next the clock and RAM frequency. You can save up to 50 Watt energy if you underclock the card in
the 2D mode. But there seems to be no tool for setting the clock rates in Linux (Thx again ATI\AMD)
Correct me please if there is one.
So the only way to save energy in Linux is to boot windows grab the Radeon BIOS Editor. Dump your
VGA BIOS and set the frequency to 200/200 for example. You can also change the fan settings which
is a real life saver.

But the biggest problem now is that the BIOS settings only apply if you are using the properitary
Catalyst driver. (Which has nearly no options)

My Display is connected with an DVI\HDMI Adapter so until 2.6.25 it was impossible to tell the catalyst not to use 1920x1080 as default resolution.
Seems to work now in 2.6.26 ( I have not changed anything and it works now. reminds me on windows)
But now comes the biggest 2 problems which are realy pissing me of. First to say none of these problems apply to the free VESA driver.
If I am using using Eclipse, Open Office, hearing music, watching movies the CPU (E8400 @ 3.0Ghz) is at 2% - 10% no problem. But if I am moving
a window only for some cm, both cores go up to 100% and the Graka fan is getting extremly noisy.
Second problem because there is no tool for changeing the cards frequency the only option is the BIOS. But the settings which work stable in windows
do not work stable in Linux (but there is no real chance to find stable values (because there is no tool....). In Windows you can watch Full HD Movies with 200Mhz Core and 200Mhz RAM
without a problem. But in Linux with xine I had to reboot after 40 minutes watching a normal XVID movie 640x480. The screen got green and it looked exactly
like under windows if you overclock the card and the system freezes.

So open problems for me:
1. Find a way to change the clock rate under linux
2. Find a way to realy enable the 2D direct rendering.
I have no errors in the Xorg.log and glxinfo reports: direct rendering: Yes

Hope that helps smile
And it would be great if other HD4870/Arch64 users could join the discussion.

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

First Arch64: If you got 4GB RAM or more there are 2 common problems.
The first seems to be connected with the new Intel P45 chipset.
(A friend of mine has the same chipset and the same problems)
I got an ASUS P5Q and if I am trying to Boot from the X86_64 CD 2008.06
I only get dropped to the GRUB commandline and I can only reboot.
Solution: Use the 2008.03 FTP CD. Works for me

My system's spec are basically the same: ASUS P5Q + 4GB RAM + Quadcore + HD4870.
I'm not totally sure, but I think booting with X86_64 2008.06 core worked for me.

Well, I wouldn't blame the catalyst but the faulty BIOS of the ASUS P5Q.

The fix for this comes from the Phoronix.com board.
You have to rebuild the /proc/mtrr by hand.
For my configuration (4GB RAM and 512MB Graka it looks like this:

# MTRR FIX *ASUS BIOS-BUG*
echo "disable=0" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=1" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=2" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=3" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=4" >| /proc/mtrr

echo "base=0x00000000 size=0x80000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x80000000 size=0x40000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0xc0000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x100000000 size=0x20000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x120000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr

just paste the lines to your /etc/rc.local and X should start.

I applied the fix before and everything was working with kernel 2.26.25 & catalyst 8.6.

I've never tried the VESA driver with my current setup, but the windows aren't lagging with radeonhd-git.

Next the current xf86-video-radeonhd-git. It got basic HD4870 support and seems to run stable.
But once again it does not look like Power Play is working or any BIOS setting have effect on the
card clock rates.

That's probably because you are changing the rates for the lowest powerplay mode and since radeonhd-git doesn't support powerplay it runs in the highest mode.

My Display is connected with an DVI\HDMI Adapter so until 2.6.25 it was impossible to tell the catalyst not to use 1920x1080 as default resolution.
Seems to work now in 2.6.26 ( I have not changed anything and it works now. reminds me on windows)

a window only for some cm, both cores go up to 100% and the Graka fan is getting extremly noisy.

Which desktop environment / window manager are you using? I'm using KDE4 and don't experience this with radeonhd-git (and didn't when catalyst still worked).

Very strange, but I believe (guess into the blue) this could be caused by too much heat for the card (which would be a driver issue if it works under windows). Do you have good case cooling?

So open problems for me:
1. Find a way to change the clock rate under linux
2. Find a way to realy enable the 2D direct rendering.
I have no errors in the Xorg.log and glxinfo reports: direct rendering: Yes

I suppose direct rendering works, but isn't totally implemented yet.

Sorry for my bad english I am not a native speaker

It is fine - and I am not a native speaker either.

So basically: I actually thought that I would run into problems when I got my new system with brand new hardware because the linux support usally comes later. Since almost everything works, I'm quite happy and ready to wait for the next releases of catalyst, when it hopefully works again and gets better as well.

As a side note: I had way more problems with Windows - need it for gaming, sigh. The vista installer never was able to run and the xp install went totally unstable.

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

running a P5Q Pro + HD4850 + Q6600 only got 2gb installed as I thought 4gb would not run I use 32 bit Arch

loaded Catalyst with no real problems

to get ethernet to work I had to build alt1e driver

system is so quiet now :-)

Noticed card does get very hot, case is cooled fine here .... wondered if you can monitor like you can with nvidia drivers?

Re: [Solved] Kernel 2.6.26, catalyst 8.7.2, Radeon HD4870 = XServer crash

So, the latest kernel update fixed catalyst 8.8 for me. smile

@Mr Green:
You can with the latest catalyst:

aticonfig --od-gettemperature

See http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=a … inux&num=1 for more information on the Overdrive-functionality.
