CUPS, Samba, and Call timed out

I'm having trouble getting any print job to finish from a Linux box to a printer connected to a Vista box. Basically all jobs stop somewhere in the middle of the first page. The error message I end up with is:

Call timed out: server did not respond after 10000 milliseconds closing remote spool

Every forum post I've seen with this problem ends up with no answer. Upgrading CUPS to a modern version does not help. Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Printer: HP Photosmart C4280 all-in-one
Drivers: HPLIP (4200 series and 4380 drivers tried)
Samba config is the default
