Something I was looking at
http://lifehacker.com/5043712/roll-your … et-desktop
Hotkeys interested me
Conky would display stuff on right that's not a problem
Anyway just caught my eye :-)

If you ask me, I don't see anything SO great on that desktop. It's nice, but it's not jaw dropping...and yes, Linux can look like that and much better...

Wouldn't xbindkeys do pretty much the same thing? The main problem that I've found with xbindkeys, though, is that I don't usually know the commands to do a lot of things. This is actually one of the reasons I can't stick with *box WMs for very long: I can't figure out how to bind some of the basic window actions that are default in DMs. I haven't used any of them for quite some time (I did use blackbox for probably a month almost 2 years ago) so I couldn't really list specifics.

I really liked the cheat sheet, too.

Gives me an idea :-)

you could use one of those pop down terminals with the cheat sheet open in less or vi or whatever... that would be sweet. It could be auto started and then any time you need to remember something just bring it down
actually that is a really awesome idea (IMO)

I've been running StumpWM for a few weeks now, and it comes with a function that displays the keybindings: you get a command name and the key it's bound to. It would be cool if all interactive programs could "export" something in a similar format to show an aggregate of what any key does at any given time.

I just found out that xbindkeys has a program to display all keybindings.... (but i use openbox and it's built in keybindings, so it doesn't do me much good.)

I've once written a small Perl script that prints all your Openbox keybindings to stdout: http://nooms.de/files/openbox/ob_getkeybind.pl
You can, for example, use it with osd_cat to display your keybindings on screen:
ob_getkeybind.pl | osd_cat <your osd_cat settings here>

Hmm, why would you want to display your keybindings ? Don't you know them already ?
Or what about
cat ~/.xbindkeysrc
?

Very nice XP desktop indeed.
I think with google desktop/gdesklets/cairo-clock/screenlets/plasma you could get the clock part out of the way easily. Conky can take care of the cpu-monitor and the now-playing piece, as you mentioned. Launchy on KDE = gnome-do on Gnome. I use gnome-do myself, and it's excellent.
The To-Do list can also be generated by conky with a script, perhaps? Edit a file, and conky will pick it up.
The transparent background - compiz takes care of that easily, by setting the cube to transparent even while it's not rotating.

conky will pick up a file and display it so not a problem..... .todo :-)
Sure I have seen desktops as sweet as that done in Arch linux.....

Anyone got a clean .conkyrc I could mess around with in Gnome?
Shopping list on my desktop might be handy lol

Are you sure conky is the most practical way of achieving that ? There are programs specifically suited for that. Gnome has an applet called notes or something like that. Of course, there is also tomboy.

tomboy suks! sorry man.... applet notes cool

AFAIK tomboy doesn't display the lists on the desktop, though. I like tomboy, but it's a big program, for what can be solved by a simple script

seriously... yeahconsole+RXVT+ gnu screen + console text editor of choice = awesome shopping list

sounds good to me, tried to get conky running but as always flickering away...
no a transparent term would do the trick

Flickering..what are you using? Care to post your conkyrc here or in a pastebin?
Generally, it might be because you haven't enabled debuffering, for instance.
