Google Chrome

I just saw the announcements that Google plans to create an open source browser completely from scratch.

Read about it here

I think it sounds like it could be really cool. If it has an extension system that is anywhere near as robust as FireFox's, and they get the cross platform versions working seamlessly, and is truly as fast as they are claiming, and with the Google trademark to back it up, it could be one of the next big browsers. I plan to definitely try it out.

Re: Google Chrome

Everywhere Google arrives, there comes innovation, so I'm quite curious about this project.

Re: Google Chrome

Ye, same with me. It seems interesting. I read a bit about it this morning on Google Reader.

Re: Google Chrome

Finally a browser that a flash plugin can't bring down!
Firefox crashes about 2-3 times a day here because of some plugin.

Hey, by the way, their comic about the browser was made by Scott McCloud! yikes

Yes, the same thing happens to me, but I really like some of the extensions thus I cannot switch
to another browser hmm

Do you know if this Chrome thing will be open source?

I tried, I failed, no matter. Try again, fail again, fail better.

Re: Google Chrome

Not entirely from scratch. They use webkit (Used by Apple's safari, in the form of KHTML also konqueror iirc, Midori, also experimentally in Gnome's Epiphany). But I'm looking forward to a good webkit browser for a long time now (currently using Opera), maybe this will be my next browser.

Re: Google Chrome

Where's the catch? The part where they rape our privacy like with every other "innovation" they've produced.

Re: Google Chrome

I read through the comic and call me naive, but I believe this browser will be my new browser as soon as they release a linux-version (tomorrow only a windows-version will be available).

There might be a catch, but what exactly are you referring to, babypuncher? Where is our prvicay raped in their other innovations? Remember that the source will be open (required because they use code from mozilla and webkit), so everyone could make a fork of the browser excluding anything that is unfriendly to one's privacy...

I CTRL+F'd on "catch" but found none! There are no catches!

Anyhow, I believe the project can become very interesting, but once again, I expect the browser to be used by the elitair (or at least not by the common user!)
Unless it can provide a huge significant value greater than IE(8) people will never move on.

Also, about raiping privacy, how could they do it? It's an open source project, if they would, people _will_ publish that within hours... They cannot affort any screw-ups in the open source world, it's a company after all (always being looked at with eagles eyes)
_and_ it's possible the chrome will not generate near W3C standards, or even comply to part of the ACID.

But, tomorrow, I'll get my virtualbox up for this one download for sure...

I can't wait to check this out. This idea of having each tab run as its own process is really interesting. It seems like chrome might be really fast, too. And regarding privacy, it's open source, and what about that "privacy" feature that's supposedly built in? yeah maybe it's naive to believe it, but it sounds pretty good so far. Everything about this browser sounds like a serious attempt at improvement, not just a gimmick. I wish a linux version was coming out first, but that's what virtualbox is for. big_smile

They are too much of a serious company to joke with something like that, on a day that is not April 1st.

Re: Google Chrome

Hm - typing up this post on the Windows version of this browser at work.  I do have to say, this mofo is a SPEEDY browser.  I've only been playing with it for a few minutes now, but stuff that's impressed me so far:

1) Speed.  The whole interface is quick, it's quite impressive.  Pageload is snappy too
2) Process Manager - the builtin manager for showing how much memory/cpu/net each individual tab and plugin is consuming is brilliant.
2a) "Stats for nerds" (About:memory) - compares overall browser mem usage vs. other currently-running browsers.  NEAT
3) Text entry boxes are nicely highlighted (neat little feature) and _resizable_.

This is just a surface look at the browser, of course, but I'm definitely liking it.    I miss vimperator and my other FF addons though. sad
