Thinkpad 600e graphics card setup

hello
I have a thinkpad 600e, with the following card:
Neomagic Magicgrapgh256av nm2200

X is running just fine but in glxgears I don't get more than approx. 45 fbs (okey, thats with some programs running, but anyway). in Knoppix glxgears tops 80-90 fps!
anyone with any clues what's wrong? i tried installing the mesa package, didn't really notice any difference?!
glxinfo tells me that direct rendering is disabled.
locate libGL shows several libGL versions, in /usr/lib and /usr/X11R6/lib respectively.

this is my graphical part of xorg.conf.

if mesa is installed, i do not get hardware acceleration (module radeon), so try removing it

check also glxinfo output for more info on what's going on

knoppix - ok, but what says arch?

and what says glxinfo?

glxinfo in arch only complains about dri if i remember correctly.

same for me, i also tried using the xfree conf file from knoppix in arch, (xorg), and the glxinfo was even a bit worse.....

i did not have mesa installed originally but installed it in my attempts to get the fps to increase

so where is the fault?
xorg?
kernel option missing? (i have my home crafted 2.6.7mm-7 kernel),
some package missing?(think not).....

i don't know...

the only difference i see is that knoppix uses a much loder mesa (4.0.4) and arch a newer one (5.0.2)
