treo 600 palm usb sync help

Alrighty, trying to get the palm sync going, looking for debug advice.  I've hit the forums already but I can't seem to get anywhere.

when I try to sync (using pilot-xfer), it just gets stuck at "please press hotsync button now..."

sequence:
Press hotsync button
then type:

pilot-xfer -p /dev/tts/USB0 -l

or

pilot-xfer -p /dev/tts/USB1 -l

relevant material from /var/log:

kernel:

Sep 1 15:56:22 localhost kernel: usb 1-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 fo
r devfs)
Sep 1 15:56:22 localhost kernel: usb 1-1: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1 (or usb/tts/1 fo
r devfs)

and

messages:

Re: treo 600 palm usb sync help

I ensured that the visor module was loaded.  I am attempting to sync as root.

Thanks for all the help, let me know if there is any other info I may provide.
