new smartphone: sync on linux

Hi,

I'm looking for firsthand experiences with syncing your phone (calendar, contacts, maybe even (push-)email) in linux.

At the office we work with evolution on the clients and dovecot, ldap and iCalendar on the server. We have both a wired network and a wireless network (secured with wpa2-psk). I guess everything is in place to make syncing possible, and since my SE s700 is slowly dying, I'm looking for a new phone that at the very least can sync my calendar.

- The Nokia E66 is very nice according to the reviews,  although it is rather expensive. It uses Symbian s60, so pairing with linux should not be an issue.
- Google android looks very promising, but it is too early at the moment (and the news that some functionality would be stripped did not look good IMHO)

So: any ideas on operating systems I should avoid (Windows Mobile f.e.) of prefer, hardware I should avoid/prefer, ideas to setup my infrastructure to make syncing as easy as possible (I have some not-so-tech-savvy colleagues whom I would like to adopt the new technologies as well)?

THX!

Re: new smartphone: sync on linux

If you are running a Linux platform then go with a Linux-based phone as well. That's the only way you'll ever get the most of your phone(s).

I owned a BB 8700 previously under Linux and was fed up by the lack of support.  I then switched to a Windows Mobile 6 device (HTC Iris) and I'm equally unsatisfied.

I'm praying that Android is a viable solution, but who knows when we'll actually see it.

Re: new smartphone: sync on linux

I have a Nokia N95 8GB, and that works well with Linux for me at least. The software I use for it is only third-party as Nokia doesn't really provide anything, but there are tons and tons of applications that work well with Symbian phones.

I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.
