Re: Help with building a new computer

I don't quite think that's going to work because it's so weird (how could that machine make something like a _GFX_ card???) Besides, if it works, those companies can't make money. Also, what does this thing make the items of ??? Plastic, metal, ... ????

I think you're looking too short-sightedly. Eventually computers may be far different than they are today, and the means of production as well.

Oh, and machines make Graphics Cards today as well, they're not made by hand... There's nothing saying that the machinery isn't going to be small and cheap enough for regular people to own eventually.

Re: Help with building a new computer

Ok!
CPU - Not recommended, waste of money compared to the Q6600, the Q9400 doesn't perform much better and is far more overpriced.
Case - Go with a thermaltake or Antec case, I suggest the Soprando DX or an antec P182 (A bit more pricier than the thermaltake
PSU - Go with a standard thermaltake one
HDD - No problem with it, good quality
DVD drive - Go with an ASUS DVD burner + lightscribe
RAM - Find 800mhz not much of a difference to 1066 unless for hardcore gaming, I believe 2GB is enough, but for gaming 4gb is preferred
Graphics Card - ATI or nvidia card that suits you, ATI drivers are harder to live with like some other have said, but the performance and price of ATI is far better. Just don't go with a generic card, go with Leadtek, ASUS or Gigabyte.
Never knew that the prices in Europe were that expensive. yikes

Europe's getting NewEgg soon. That'll shake up the competition.

Re: Help with building a new computer

I wonder why all you guys tell me something's wrong with the comp _after_ I bought it ? Seems to me u guys are just trying to make me sad cause I didn't choose something else. And by the way, I couldn't find Q6600 in the shop. I wonder how much it'd cost.

Re: Help with building a new computer

The Q6600 is being phased out, so if your shop doesn't have it anymore, they won't order new ones.

Don't worry about your system: you said it yourself you could install NFS and play it at max settings. That's all you have to care about (and of course the fact that you'll be able to do so for several years).

About the Q6600 vs Q9400-discussion:
- the Q9400 is built in 45nm instead of 65nm, so it will run cooler, quieter and use less electricity
- the Q9400 has support for SSE4-instructions, so applications making use of it will be faster (or you could optimize your system and apps even more with compiler flags)
- the Q9400 runs at 1333Mhz whereas the Q6600 runs at 1066Mhz FSB. This should improve the overall feel of the system.

About the Q9400 on a P35-motherboard:
You're right: you don't need a P45 to be able to use a Q9400 - my bad.

Zeist : you're right about the part about the difference in computers. But I know they aren't made by hand. I said "How could _that_ machine make something like a GFX card ?
I certainly hope the machines for making components will be portable and cheap enough for regular people to own.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

The Antec P182 is an absolutely brilliant case. I have a P180 that I've had since they first came out and I must say that it's the first case I've ever owned that I've been completely satisfied with... and I've owned Lian-li chassis that cost more than twice of what it does.

Does anyone actually use Lightscribe? In my opinion Lightscribe media is too expensive, and the labels that Lightscribe write suck. I barely ever see anyone that sells Lightscribe media anymore so I thought it was dying out.

Yeah, from what I've heard the P182 is the best mid case, wish there was a full tower equivalent, guess when I need a large case I have to pick the Coolermaster RC-830

I know the lightscribe functions are next to worthless, but what the hell wink Here the drives cost only $30.

Don't know if importing costs will do anything, but if that doesn't affect the prices thats going to do something bad to the Europe market wink
Costco is going to do the same when it will spread to other markets wink
