A few Opera questions

1. Is there any way to make it so that when I click the close button on the opera window, it hides in the system tray instead of closing? (Deluge has this option, as well as claws-mail)

2. Is there a way to make Opera start in the tray?

Re: A few Opera questions

Now why would you want your browser in a tray ? It doesn't belong there dude. Besides wasting memory it could also expose you to some of it's security flaws...

Re: A few Opera questions

Try Alltray.  I if you alias or change your .desktop files to include alltray when you open it, it adds a system tray icon right away.

Personally, I don't think it matters why he wants it done.  It can be done and so he should be able to do it.

alltray --help
GTK Accessibility Module initialized

AllTray Version 0.69

Dock any program into the system tray.

usage: alltray [options] ["] <program_name> [program parameter] ["]

 where options include:
   --help; -h: print this message
   --version; -v: print version
   --debug; -d: show debug messages
--show; -s: do not hide window after start
--icon; -i <path to png>: use this icon
   --large_icons; -l: allow large icons (> 24x24)
--sticky; -st: visible on all workspaces
--skip-taskbar; -stask: not visible in taskbar
--no-alltray; -na: no "(Alltray)" in window title
--borderless; -x: remove border, title, frame (if not supported native)
--menu; -m: "menu text:command": add entry to popdown menu
   --title; -t
: show tooltip with title for
seconds after song change
--geometry; -g [<width>x<height>][{+-}<x>{+-}<y>]: initial position (if not supported native)
   --key; -k [Modifier:]Key: Keyboard shortcut:
     Modifier="Shift", "Control", "Alt", "AltGr"
     Key (Examples) = "a", "F1", "End" ...
or "Keycode" (Number) returned by the program "xev"
--notray; -nt: display no tray icon (usefull only with the "--key" option)
--nominimize; -nm: click on window close button: do not minimize back to system tray, close
--configure; -conf: show KDE configuration dialog

usage: alltray

Click-Mode: Click on the window you would like to dock.

Re: A few Opera questions

I know that normally a browser doesn't belong in the tray, and honestly the tray icon annoyed me at first. But I'm now using its built-in mail client (which is VERY nice, by the way). I want the mail to always alert me of new messages, even when I'm not browsing the 'net.

I usually use claws, which sits in the tray until I get an email. I wanted Opera to do the same.

And what do you mean by expose me to security flaws? If I'm running the browser anyway, aren't I just as exposed as if I let it sit in the tray?

EDIT: I guess I might just make a mail notifying script for conky and not worry about it...

You are, but you are unnecessarily exposed when you leave it running while not using it. Nevermind, alltray should do it for you, although I don't find that too elegant...

P.S. There are other ways to be notified of new mail. You could use a conky script, maybe some desklets or screenlets, or maybe mail-notification or checkgmail (if it's what you use). These last two are nice and sit in a tray wink

Re: A few Opera questions

I just got conky set up to check for new email, so that's what I prefer at the moment too.

Re: A few Opera questions

Is it easy to adapt conky to check non-gmail accounts? I think that's a very appealing solution.

Re: A few Opera questions

Opera features a tray icon; a single-click hides/opens all windows.
Normally you should also get email notifications. They look exactly the same as the "Transfer finished" hints.

Re: A few Opera questions

The only thing I don't like about Opera's mail notification is that the icon only shows if there are any unread messages. Whereas Claws shows if there are unread, but has a totally different icon if there are *new* messages (as in, recently recieved). So, if I go away from my computer and come back, I can't tell if I have new mail or just unread messages with Opera.

So, instead of depending on Opera to tell me, I think I rather just let conky tell me.

Of course, I could also just read all my emails, so that unread email = new email, but that's just not how I work. cool

I'm assuming you already know that Opera minimizes to the tray by default.  Just click the minimize icon instead of close tongue

If you're worried about accidentally closing it, you can always enable the "Confirm on Exit" option in the preferences.

This depends on your windows manager/environment.  Openbox for example can start any application minimized which should, at least in theory minimize Opera to the tray as well.

Re: A few Opera questions

$ opera --help | grep icon
 -iconic start in iconified state
-smallicon use a smaller icon image
-notrayicon do not show an Opera icon in system tray

Actually, Opera doesn't minimize to tray for me (I'm using Tint Task Manager). And for now I do have "confirm on exit" set, until I train myself for click the tray icon to hide it.

And thanks to Byte for finding the iconic option for me! That's exactly what I need in my autostart.sh!

Re: A few Opera questions

You can minimize Opera to the tray by just clicking on Opera's tray icon.

Hrmm unless things have radically changed with Tint, it doesn't have a system tray. You need to be using a system tray application or panel, such as stalonetray, trayer, pypanel, bmpanel, etc.

Re: A few Opera questions

What I meant by that post, was that when I click the minimize button, Opera minimizes like any other window. It doesn't disappear from the task bar like someone suggested it does.

Anyway, I have a new question that is trivial.

Why doesn't Opera's icon show in Tint? All my other applications have appropriate icons. Is there a specific place that TTM looks for icons?

Re: A few Opera questions

it does fine here.. without any further tweak.. using tint2 as panel and trayer as a systray

Re: A few Opera questions

Had the same problem with the icon in tint. Using bmpanel i don't have that problem. The tray icon however still acts up somehow and decides to disappear completely / half from time to time
