can't install because tzdata-2008d-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is corrupt

Hi,

I am trying to install Arch on my T61, but I run into this error ("tzdata-2008d-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is corrupt"). I have tried different mirrors over and over again but this error shows up every time (though sometimes wget segfaults? I don't know what's happening). Has anyone else seen this? Is the package bad on the servers? I can't even try this distribution without the package it seems sad

Remove the corrupted package file from the cache (/var/cache/pacman/pkg/) and try again.  Also, are you using the ftp ISO?  I've had good luck with the core ISO.

I did that. It seems that this package fails from every server!

I suppose you are doing and FTP install, have you tried an ISO install? At least you would be able to get through the installation. Then  you could try  to grab that package from some user, perhaps...

Re: can't install because tzdata-2008d-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is corrupt

I'm getting this too.  I've tried the core cd, the ftp cd (several different mirrors), fresh downloads+burns of each - still fails on corrupt packages.  I've formatted the only disk on the install machine between some attempts, and it still always fails with the same corrupt package error - but not always the same package.

Weird thing, Vector linux (on a known-good install CD) fails in a similar way, yet Debian just installed without a hitch.  Slax 5.1 live cd boots fine, as does Mandriva-based ZoneMonitor liveCD..  gOS 3 boots but won't load X properly.

Perhaps I have some combination of hardware - 1Ghz Athlon of some kind, I think an ASUS motherboard, 512mb of ram, nvidia gfx, seagate disk.  It's not my machine, I'm "fixing" it for a friend.  Pretty standard, albeit fairly elderly, rig - nothing new or weird.

it's a shame, 'cos I was well looking forward to playing with Arch.

tzdata 2008e-1 is out already, try it again and see what happens. Maybe they goofed something in the pkgbuild.

Re: can't install because tzdata-2008d-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is corrupt

Thanks for the heads up, Xyne.  I last tried a few hours ago.  failed on man-1.6f-2-i686.pkg this time though.

I'll probably try a few more times today - it is sunday after all.

Could well just be bad luck I'm trying to install just as some packages are temporarily broken.  (I remember that happening a few times with Debian, years ago).

I guess you could file a bug report.

I'm keeping notes.  If anything consistent and easily replicated starts to happen, I'll get on the case.  Do you have a link handy for the Arch bug tracker?  If not, don't worry, I'm sure I can find it.

Re: can't install because tzdata-2008d-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz is corrupt

Thanks.  I don't think this is a bug though, someone else would have noticed this by now.  It's also very inconsistent - install ALWAYS fails, but it fails in a variety of interesting and weird ways.

here's a screenshot of the most recent failure: http://mat.moblog.co.uk/DSC00099.JPG

I've cut a new CD (from a fresh download too) since the one that gave that error.  Install is still failing.  Debian is still fine.  Vector is still failing too.

I wonder if I have some kind of crazy combination of hardware that slack-based distros just don't like? It seems very unlikely that I do, but I can't think of anything else - what are the chances of FIVE cds failing?  (especially when they all checked as "Written OK" in Brasero)  I even went and bought more blanks to make sure it wasn't a dodgy batch I had, and I 'borrowed' some nice TDK cds from my housemate.
