Desktop note-taking app

I'm looking an app similar to Tomboy that lets me take notes right on my desktop but something much lighter (I need about 150mb of deps for it) and something that blends in better (basically I just want to write on a small area with no background). I don't need any features besides being able to type stuff smile. Does an app like this exist?

Re: Desktop note-taking app

Vim/nano in a transparent console (urxvt) without borders? You could create a launcher that opens up a small urxvt -e vim without borders and with full transparency.

Or even more simple  "echo blablablablablablabla. .... blabla > note"

Re: Desktop note-taking app

Hm well there are a couple problems with that. One, both nano and vim have their own markings (ie the key commands in nano) that I don't know if you can take off (I'd like just my own text to appear). And two, I don't know if there'd be any way to get the same notes automatically updated on all of my desktops.

Re: Desktop note-taking app

I'm in search for a good note taking app too. For now I'm using zim http://zim-wiki.org/ it is a desktop-wiki the file syntax is simple (plain text) The deps is low (gtk2-perl  librsvg  perl-file-mimeinfo).

But I only used it for a week... ^_^

Re: Desktop note-taking app

That's not quite what I'm looking for either. I don't need it to take any comprehensive notes, more like a small to-do list that's right on my desktop like conky (except of course being able to write on it).

What about something like xpad? I don't think you can make it transparent, but you can change the background color to at least make it blend in pretty well.

Re: Desktop note-taking app

Or xcompmgr + transset-df

That would suit your needs pretty fine.

Re: Desktop note-taking app

Mmm.... So I tried installing xcompmgr but it doesn't to work properly. After I run it, all of my windows and panels dissapear but if I mouse-over something it will quickly appear and disappear again. Same thing if I switch through my desktops quickly. I have composite enabled (with nvidia drivers) and xgl (not sure if I need it) installed.

Re: Desktop note-taking app

Not sure if you got what you wanted or not, but try this out... Just add a similar line to your .conkyrc file:

${head /path/to/todo.txt 30 20}

Idea lifted from this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=54407&p=2

I set mine up this way and it works well.  I also bound a keyboard shortcut to open up my todo.txt file in my text editor so I can add new things at will.  Hopefully it will do.
