Arch Linux + XDM + Compiz Fusion + Emerald + AWN + Leopard Dock: works

Hi, subject explains.

I know, this subject is for most Arch Linux people not *that* interesting but I have come across a lot of people on internet (forum/chat) that people cannot believe this configuration can work.

* XDM has been customized w.r.t. Gentoo Wiki. /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 offers reboot/shutdown buttons on XDM. I know they seem weird, but it works. It gives me the thing I want.
* Compiz Fusion installed with all extras and all its plugins,
* Emerald too,
* AWN too (with extra applets),
* $HOME/.xsession contains

fusion-icon &
exec avant-window-navigator

I have following hardware:
* AMD Athlon XP 2800+ on MSI KT6 Ultra MS-6590 (VIA VT8237)
* 1 GB RAM
* GeForce FX 5200 video adapter 128 MB (supports AIGLX, Composite mode)
* LG GH20NS10 SATA DVD
* Samsung SM-352B IDE DVD-ROM/CD
* 2x 80 GB IDE harddisks: Windows XP /dev/sda1, Ubuntu /dev/sda6, Fedora /dev/sdb5, Arch Linux /dev/sdb6

Almost no one believed me that Compiz could be run without any desktop environment (ie. no KDE, GNOME, Xfce4, Openbox, Fluxbox etc). Yes I have no Nautilus or whatever. No file manager, no icons on desktop, no trash bin on desktop either. No drag drop.

AWN setting files were configured in UNIX command line. Now I have Leopard Dock-alike Mac OS X effect on AWN. Firefox and OpenOffice can be started in 1 second on such an old hardware. Please note that the hardware above is 4 years old (look at CPU). Not to mention Compiz Cube, Sphere effects.

You are my hero, Arch Linux!

Can has some screenshots?

And maybe a video via youtube? Your video card sounds a little on the... performance-lacking side, so while it might be able to spin the cube sweetly I doubt it'd be able to while also running xvidcap. So a video camera is probably a good idea to capture the smoothness of it, which is probably what you want to do.

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

As for the "compiz without a DE" part, several peolple (including myself, actually) have episodically been posting screenshots of it in the monthly screenshots threads.

I'll second that it works absolutely fine even on surprisingly modest hardware. It's also a very good choice for computers like the Eee series with mediocre CPU but a viable graphics card you won't be using for anything else anyway (I tried it on mine, it was actually lighter on my resources that openbox. But I can't live without Openbox's menus and directional focus so I went back).
