I use gnome-screensaver as my screensaver. I've set it to lock the screen but when gnome-screensaver actually kicks in, I don't get the unlock screen so I have to kill my session and relogin. Any thoughts?

I found out it doesn't have to do with the unlock screen. When I disable lock screen in gnome-screensaver I still get the same problem: when gnome-screensaver kicks in, and when I want to work again, I get a black screen for an instant and gnome-screensaver continues again.

Make sure you have dbus running. I had a similar issue.

dbus is running and also in the daemon list.

hal too ? I'm not sure which of these two was the problem for me.
Maybe running gnome-screensaver-command -a or -d manually gives some more info.

Hal is running as well, but when I dig into the boot log I found this out: dbus reports the pid file already exists and doesn't start. I tried to remove the pid file and start dbus. But on the next boot, I get the same message about the still existing pid file.

dirty temp fix in the mean time: add a line in /etc/rc.local.shutdown to remove the pid file when you reboot.

My apologies for the late response. I haven't been on my arch system lately and I'm still not. The suggested solutions didn't work for me, but after examining the wiki pages related to hal and dbus, I think I've found the solution. I haven't added myself to the hal user group. I'll test this in the near future.
