usb external HD

I am having trouble mounting my usb external HD.  The device does not even show up in the /dev/ directory.  I have HAL running.  what could be the problem?

EDIT: i am using xfce4

Do a lsusb and than plug in the device and do a lsusb again... If nothing changes... then you are in serious trouble.

The same thing goes for dmesg - one before plugging the hard drive in and one after.
Also are you sure the hard drive is working? Have you tested it on other PC? And what about your USB ports? One of them could be broken? Did you try different port?
