Something like AirTunes functionality possibly emulated with Linux?

Hey guys. Here is my setup at home: I have a Mac in one corner of the room and a Linux HTPC (running Arch) in the other corner. The Mac is wireless. The HTPC is wired to the D-Link wireless router. The HTPC is connected to a stereo system via line-out audio.

Is there a way to stream audio from the Mac to the Linux box so that it plays out via the stereo. I've tried this with a streaming server on the Mac and using various players to listen to the stream. This is OK except there is always a delay introduced--I assume due to caching.

I would love to be able to stream audio with no delay whatsoever. So that, for instance, video playback is still useful. I really don't need the caching as I am connected of 802.11N networking.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks so much!

Thanks for the reply but I think this is the opposite of what I want, no?

Doesn't mt-dappd act as a music server that you can tune into using a client like iTunes?

I want to be able to send all of my audio to my Linux box and have it output using Alsa to my stereo system. I suppose like having my Linux box as an audio output jack on my other computer.

i think he wants it vice versa. controll the music player / server / streamer which is installed on his macbook via his arch box...

im not sure but i think mpd is able to do this.

doesn't VLC have nice streaming features?  i've never used it so i don't know about the delay, etc.  but it's cross platform so worth a look.

Re: Something like AirTunes functionality possibly emulated with Linux?

I have tried all streaming out there... but all streamers and receivers incorporate some sort of delay which I assume has to do with caching. The best solution so far is to stream my system audio from the Mac using NiceCast and listen to this stream using BMP. There is a minimal <1Sec delay but it dynamically creeps up to over 1 second sometimes.

I really want to get away from this streaming delay.

I've never used Apple's airtunes, but I assume it doesn't have any delay associated with it as it's designed for LAN usage.

Pulseaudio could be a solution. It works on POSIX which means I could probably get it going on my Mac. Is this something Pulseaudio can do?

Hey, look at this:

Thanks TecnoVM64 for the Pulseaudio heads up. I'll see if I can get this working and let you guys know.
