Error when logging in? (Display)

Hi,

When logging in, I get an error saying GDM: XServer not found: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 -auth /var/lib/gdb/:1.Xauth
Error: Command could not be executed

etc
etc

But after it goes away, I can log in just fine.

Clearly there is an errenous line in some file somewhere causing this... where should I be looking for it?

Thanks

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Do you see anything in your xorg logs?  Check by doing:

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Have a look at this section of the wiki page for xorg:  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xor … uration.29.

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Eugh I still can't get rid of this error. The Type1 message is gone, but not the GLCOre one. Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

I had that problem too.  My libglcore file had an .xorg extension.  The glcore error disappeared after I created a symlink with an .so extension.

In your xorg.conf, in the "Files" section, there should be a line for ModulePath.  Look in that directory and it's sub-directories.

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Oh.  Look in /usr/lib/xorg/modules/ and its sub-directories.

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Ok thanks... do I need to add a line to my xorg.conf for ModulePath too? (I too had the name issue on the libglcore)

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

If adding the symlink fixes the problem, then no.

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Eugh it gets worse now...

I got a message saying:

GDM: XServer not found: /usr/X11R6/bin/X :1 -auth/var/lib/gdm:1.Xauth
Error: Command could not be executed!
Please install the X server or correct GDM configuration and restart GDM

Now I am in Gnome and the desktop and background are white and things on;y appear when I mouseover them.

All I did was the symlink tigrmesh suggested.

I also tried adding the following line in:

    ModulePath      "/usr/lib/xorg/modules"

but then I couldn't load x at all.

Xorg.conf:

# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Fri Jan 11 15:05:59 PST 2008

# nvidia-settings: X configuration file generated by nvidia-settings
# nvidia-settings: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Wed Jun 13 18:40:26 PDT 2007

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

I'm looking again at your error message, and I'm wondering something:  do you have a
/usr/X11R6/bin/X
directory?  I use GDM, and I don't have an X11R6 directory on my system anywhere.

Also, what do you get when you do

ls /var/lib/gdm

?
I have 2 files in that directory:
:0.Xauth  :0.Xservers

For some reason, GDM is looking for at least 1 (/usrX11R6/bin/X) and possibly 2
(/var/lib/gdm:1.Xauth) files that do not exist.  Try changing your GDM theme.

Btw, the ModulePath line would have needed to go in the "Files" section, like RgbPath.

Re: Error when logging in? (Display)

Hi,

Sorry for the slow reply, been away with work all week...

I have no /usr/X11R6/bin/X directory

/var/lib/gdm is the same as yours.

Thanks
