No I don't as I never used tetex. Try again to run

sudo fmtutil-sys --all

If it fails again have a look at the log files under /usr/share/texmf-var/web2c/pdftex/<format>.log
It could be that you have files under ~/texmf or under your $TEXMFLOCAL that stand in the way,

Strange. Try to uninstall texlive-core and re-install it.
I had similar error messages once because of conflicting files under my TEXMFHOME. Be sure to check that.
If it persists send me one of your logfiles.

I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling. I also removed ~/.texlive

This isn't happening here on x86_64 where texlive-core is at 2008.10429. There is more than one thread started about this:

Re: Testers needed for new TeXLive packages!

[CAUTION --- I did not remove the old distribution in /opt prior to upgrading, and was able to save the programs and font I had added. Make sure you save any downloads or fonts before removing latex from /opt. The removal of the old programs is recommended.]

I just upgraded the texlive package which moves the download from /opt to /usr. Since I use XeTeX for the opentype fonts, I found additional configuration was needed to get xetex to operate flawlessly.

PROBLEM 1.
The opentype fonts are in the distribution but are not installed. If you click on one of the fonts the box containing the font samples has a button on the bottom: INSTALL. I began to use this method, but found too many fonts to handle, so I used the method recommended in the XeTeX Companion and edited ~/.fonts.conf by adding the following xml code:

-->

<dir>/usr/share/texmf-dist/fonts/opentype</dir>
<dir>/usr/share/texmf-dist/fonts/type1</dir>

<!--

I then ran fc-cache (as user - not as root)
and then fc-list > ~/fc-list.txt

This gave me 16 pages of installed fonts. I ran enscript --word-wrap -M Letter -p fc-list.ps fc-list.txt to get a postscript file and ps2pdf to give me something that I could use to get 2 pages to a sheet. (Cups used to do this for ps files, but it does not work correctly any more).

The fonts are now recognized. Getting the correct listing for fontspec to run the font may take some experimentation.

PROBLEM 2

I had installed some individual packages from CTAN which I needed (eqparbox, lettrine, soul, everypage, textfit and wallpaper), which under the old distribution were in /opt/texlive/texmf-local/tex/latex. Since the new setup in /usr has no texmf-local directory, the question was -- where is the new directory and how is it set up. The wiki (which is out of date -- sorry) gives instructions which are vague. Going to the texlive documentation (see the wiki for the url) gives some helpful information and some which is not helpful. After a lot of experimentation, I found the texconfig command, and ran:
          texconfig conf
this gave me the following:

[root@newnet wpt]# texconfig conf

which gave me /usr/local/share/texmf as the TEXMFLOCAL directory. I added two sub-directories, mimicing the main distribution (/tex/latex) and would up with /usr/local/share/texmf/tex/latex. I put all my packages in the latex sub-directory.

Then the queston was -- how do I get the new directories and the packages recognized. It was recommended in the docs that I run the script mktexlsr in /usr/share/texmf. I may have done it wrong, but no script (either mktexlsr, or mktexslr) was found. As a result I ran two commands in the /usr/share/texmf directory:
                   ls -1LAR ./ > ls-R
and then           texhash

I have no idea if the ls -1LAR ./ > ls-R command was effective or not, but the ls-R file did show up in /usr/local/share/texmf. I then ran texhash, and the new directory and its programs are now recognized.

This is obviously trial and error, but the above worked for me. Hopefully, it may save you time.

This is something that should be done by you. No texlive distribution does it, and it would be absurd for many users to install all opentype fonts provided by TeXLive to the system.

Since the new setup in /usr has no texmf-local directory,

Wrong. You missed the post-install message.

No, no! Just run:

and you're done.

My pleasure!

BTW I am currently working in the little spare time I have on a small command-line utility to keep texlive up-to-date between major releases (of the texlive-* packages in extra), by selectively installing new CTAN pkgs under TEXMFLOCAL. I will probably announce this in a different thread and ask you guys to test it.

PS: So you are back to Germany now? How was Tennessee?

Yes, but that seems to be a problem of memoir.cls. pdftex is pdfetex and pdflatex is pdfelatex since tetex 3.0 now, and a macro \ifetex does not make much sense IMHO.

But is there actually a problem? I mean, yes, memoir complains, but it seems to be working fine, at least from looking at the log you posted. (pdf)etex is backwards compatible to (pdf)tex.

No it is not a problem. I just looked up on CTAN, ifetex is not included in the Oberdiek-bundle anymore. And the warning says, ifetex will be emulated by memoir anyway.

Re: Testers needed for new TeXLive packages!

This just means that dvips/dvi-viewer thinks that ec-iwona is not available as a postscript font, but only as a bitmap one (which it can't find, since iwona fonts are not distributed as bitmap fonts at all).

Try running: 'updmap --enable Map iwona.map' - that should update/regenerate the map files available to dvips and your dvi-viewer; and then viewing the dvi again. Of course, this helps only if you do have postscript iwona fonts installed (for instance 'locate iwonar.pfb' returns some path).

1. iwonar.pfb exists in /usr/share/texmf-dist/fonts/type1/public/iwona
2. locate iwonar.pfb does not return any path.
3.After running  'updmap --enable Map iwona.map'  iwona.map appears in /usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg, but the error message remains and the font replaced.
Iwona works fine in xelatex.

Interestingly -- I downloaded and successfully installed URW garamond to the /usr/local/share/texmf local directory... and that works perfectly. Times also works. It appears iwona (and maybe others that I don't know about) is not being read. Strange..

That's good, it doesn't matter that locate doesn't find it... it was just to make sure that you have the fonts, and apparently you do smile

Strange indeed. By the way, I think that 'updmap' run as (any) user should update $HOME/.texlive/texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg; updmap-sys as root should update /usr/share/texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg; and the one you mention (/usr/share/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg) should just be the one that is supplied initially by the texlive-bin package. [For the info on the whole texmf tree overlay structure, it's helpful to go through the config file /usr/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf]

So... could you please check the local updmap.cfg file? Also, could you specify how do you try to load iwona fonts? I just went with /usepackage{iwona}, without any other language/encoding specification, and it works fine, although it loads qx-iwona instead of ec-iwona. That shouldn't matter though.

--- edit
- some more tracing can be done by 'updmap --listavailablemaps' - make sure iwona.map is in the list.
- could you please try to run dvips on that dvi file that is generated, to see if dvips picks up iwona fonts correctly? [in your output above, it's only xdvi that complains]

Re: Testers needed for new TeXLive packages!

ran updmap as user rather than root and it now works perfectly. BUT -- since iwona is part of the original install, why would it not have been recognized along with the other original fonts?
But at least the problem is solved.

I think that as long as you don't have the local ~/.texlive/texmf-config/web2c/updmap.cfg, the system-wide one is used, and the system-wide one is also the one that gets correctly updated when you install texlive-fontsextra (which contains iwona fonts). But as soon as you *have* a local updmap.cfg, that does *not* get updated on regular package updates (since pacman/packages don't touch files in your $HOME).

So what might have happened is that at some point the local updmap.cfg was created, and it didn't include iwona.map.

EDIT: If you're up to some experimenting, you can try to delete ~/.texlive/texmf-config (provided you didn't make some other configuration changes that you want to keep), and regenerate the system-wide map files by 'updmap-sys' as root (iwona.map should be listed).

Re: Testers needed for new TeXLive packages!

After updating to texlive I have a problem with compiling work documents. I'm not particularly fluent in all things (la)tex, I tried to fix it on my Arch laptop according to instructions for Debian/Ubuntu but it didn't work. It worked fine on a box with Ubuntu. Below are the instructions:

To the file /etc/texmf/fmt.d/10texlive-lang-polish.cnf add:

platex pdfetex language.dat -translate-file=cp227.tcx *platex.ini
pdfplatex pdfetex language.dat -translate-file=cp227.tcx *pdfplatex.ini

Then run "sudo update-fmtutil" and "sudo fmtutil-sys --all".

On Arch there's no /etc/texmf/* so I tried to add it with "fmtutil --edit" and then using "fmtutil --all" but I still get the same error:

TEXINPUTS=.:./TeX-local:../../../../../7bcsty:$TEXINPUTS TEXFONTS=.:./TeX-local:$TEXFONTS TEXPSHEADERS=.:./TeX-local:../../../../../7bcsty:$TEXPSHEADERS  pdfplatex -parse-first-line animacja.tex
This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.1415926-1.40.9 (Web2C 7.5.7)
%&-line parsing enabled.
(/usr/share/texmf/web2c/il2-pl.tcx)

kpathsea: Running mktexfmt pdfplatex.fmt
I can't find the format file `pdfplatex.fmt'!

When I tried to transfer pdfplatex.fmt file from the Ubuntu box I get:

TEXINPUTS=.:./TeX-local:../../../../../7bcsty:$TEXINPUTS TEXFONTS=.:./TeX-local:$TEXFONTS TEXPSHEADERS=.:./TeX-local:../../../../../7bcsty:$TEXPSHEADERS  pdfplatex -parse-first-line animacja.tex
This is pdfTeXk, Version 3.1415926-1.40.9 (Web2C 7.5.7)
%&-line parsing enabled.
(/usr/share/texmf/web2c/il2-pl.tcx)
---! pdfplatex.fmt was written by pdfetex
(Fatal format file error; I'm stymied)
make: *** [animacja.pdf] Error 1

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: The instruction also says to make a symlink to provide pdfplatex: "ln -s /usr/bin/pdfetex /usr/local/bin/pdfplatex".

Re: Testers needed for new TeXLive packages!

Try to add the two lines you mentioned to /usr/share/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf and run fmtutil-sys --missing.
