Package Updates

Hello everyone,

I'm having a bit of a problem with doing a system upgrade. I currently use the ATI proprietry drivers and therefore have a custom libgl which comes with the catalyst drivers. However when I try to upgrade I run into this question:

looking for inter-conflicts...
:: libgl conflicts with catalyst-utils. Remove catalyst-utils? [Y/n]

How can I resolve this? I have tried removing the libgl package with

pacman -Rd libgl

but it says that the package cannot be found?

I guess something that you are pulling with the update depends on libgl. It would be helpful if you could post all output from pacman -Syu.

Also try changing a mirror, sometimes some mirrors happen to generate such errors until fully updated.

Thats the full pacman output, will try changing the mirror see if that helps!

Edit: Changing the mirror results in the same conflict.

If you specifically want to remove libgl and nothing else, you only want the -R flag. I don't even think -Rd is a valid flag to use.

libgl not found, searching for group...
error: 'libgl': not found in local db

It still doesnt find the package, obviously I dont want to remove my catalyst drivers, but I also want to keep an up-to-date system. I can't understand how these packages can co-exist on my system without causing any problems, it makes me think that libgl isn't installed but pacman thinks that it is?

The package that is installed and is causing the conflict is "catalyst-utils", not libgl. It looks like your upgrade is attempting to install libgl but there is a file conflict. You can try removing the catalyst-utils package but I'm not sure what that has the possibility of breaking.

Hm, do you have the testing repository enabled? Maybe you found a bug?

And what if you remove the utils, upgrade and reinstall them?

I'm afraid that is everything i can say, because i use a nvidia.

Yes, I do have the testing repository enabled. I can't uninstall it when I press Y I get this error:

:: libgl conflicts with catalyst-utils. Remove catalyst-utils? [Y/n] Y
error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
:: libgl: conflicts with catalyst-utils

Thinks like that happen when you have testing enabled. Try to disable it in pacman.conf and try upgrading again.

I have Catalyst in this old laptop of mine and it just updated just fine (without testing). But then of course maybe another package in your system causes the conflict.

You're missing the interesting part of that pacman -Syu dialog: hit 'n' when it asks you to replace catalyst-utils

Edit:
A bit more background: nvidia-utils and catalyst-utils both "provide" libgl as kind of a virtual package that other pkgs can depend on. You got that message because something wants to pull in the actual libgl package which of course conflicts with the already existing catalyst-utils.

Edit 2:
Ah, and now to the conclusion (didn't see it before): Don't use the testing repo. Or wait until catalyst 8.9 gets released. The current 8.8 doesn't work with the xorg-server 1.5 in testing.

This looks like a versioned depend on libgl "depends=('libgl>=1.2.3')" in some package. The problem is not in testing, as my nvidia machine is fine. Run pacman -Qu to get a list of packages that are upgraded.

The general suspects are third-party repositories (all except testing, core, extra and community). Remove all of those and see if it happens again.
