Would be a very happy gnome-mplayer user if mplayer where able to play isos or even better rar-archived movies. As it is now it is'nt able to use the menues or even extract subtitles from an iso.
VLC is the only player that I know of that are able to that. You can mount the iso using loopback and play it as a dvd using mplayer.
Like: mplayer dvd:// -dvd-device <mount_point>Now you can choose among the various subtitles/aids that the dvd supports.
Thats a workaround. But sadly only a workaround that works using the terminal. For my girlfriend thats not an option, and francly not for me either.
First modprobe loop, then mount the iso and finally run mplayer from the terminal pointing to the current mountpoint. Compare this to selecting the iso or rar-files and subtitles directly from the gui.
Still vlc default gui is very messy and with the comming release and QT it falls even lower.

command not found is pretty strange as, IIRC, makepkg comes with pacman (or is it w/ abs?)
BTW, FWIW, i forgot the vlc.install file, it's here:

I get the same error, and I definitely have makepkg installed.
Just to be sure it happened correct. Made a file entitled 'PKGBUILD' and pasted your build into it. Likewise with a file I named vlc.install and what you posted for that, placed them in a folder I named vlc-09. Cded into that folder executed 'makepkg' amd got the error code specified.

I used this PKGBUILD successfully on 2 different machines... not a single clue about the problem...
I could upload a core2 package if anyone is interested...

The problem arise when you download the file and then rename it (probably cause is windows format). If you copy and then paste in a new file (named PKGBUILD) then all is ok.

you people are confusing me a lot
archive of the PKGBUILD + install file: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?n7ezhqrqkdn
i just tried again, works for me (TM)
NB: don't forget to adjust the --with-tuning flag to your machine's arch (or just nuke that option)

I did paste it into a new file.
At any rate the vlc-branch in AUR worked like a charm for mme.

using your PKGBUILD and install file, I'm running into the following compile error:

I don't know about for everyone else, but Mplayer has played .iso files for me for a long time. I just tested it on both SMplayer and Mplayer to make sure I wasn't delusional, and it definitely worked. All I did was drag it into the window and it played.
(Fitting the movie onto two CD-RWs.... weird, I know, but I have a $25 dollar DVD player that plays almost anything I put in it—except for DivX/Xvid/MPEG-4 disks—I don't have a DVD burner that works anymore, and I wanted to watch a movie with my brother. Works, so who cares?)

mine is just a 5 min punked version of the vlc-git one...

well, it looks like another win for QT/kde. VLC is, alongside mplayer (which, in smplayer also has a great qt interface), the killer video app for linux and one that is popular with windows users as well.
I think we'll be seeing some awesome kde distros next year when kde 4 matures that bit extra and more distros are ready to really commit to it. With a bit more fan contributions in terms of icon sets etc as well and it should be getting very fun to customise as well.
I am not quite decided on vlc yet. It used to be my favourite player with the inability to set only one instance of it being my only annoyance. Since moving to kde and discovering smplayer, I've come to really enjoy that one though. This new vlc allows for only one instance and is qt, so that's my reasons for abandoning fixed right there, but I'm just not sure it does what smplayer does for me anymore.

I've been using 1.0.0 from git with fairly good results, but I'd like to ask: what about the browser plugin? Does it work properly?
Anyone tried it?

I can't install this due to missing live-media 2008.07.25 package... I can't find it in AUR either
Grab the PKGBUILD from ABS, rename the version, comment out the md5sums, and build.
