Hello. I am installing Archlinux for the first time in an old P3. I am following the beginners guide step by step. However, after installing libgl, xorg, mesa and xf86-video-ati driver, doing a Xorg -configure and a X -config /root/xorg.conf.new I go back (after ctrl alt backspace) to tty with a very dark screen, almost unreadable, as if the font colour had turned dark grey. In X -config the mouse pointer (the X) seems to be drawn with normal brightness. Am I doing something wrong?

I forgot to mention my GPU is a Radeon RV100 QY (ati radeon 7000/VE)

Well, it happens every time I quit X, the "console mode" gets too dark to see anything, barely enough with lights off. However, X seem unaffected and entering again I have normal brightness. I am quite surprised as out of the X nothing should affect the display configuration...

I have installed the proprietary ATI drivers and it seems normal now. However, as I have a radeon 7000 I don't think it is very supported...

Got the same problem with radeon 9200, using "radeon" driver.

Same problem here with opensource ati driver, gpu is: radeon 9500

Had the same problem while configuring X (with open source radeon driver), so I used hwd.
GPU: Radeon Mobility X700

Same here, with xf86-video-ati 6.9 from [testing] and with a X1400 card. Actually a step forward from 6.8, with that driver I couldn't go back to cli at all.
Arrgh - I want ati to be more open-minded, ehh, meant open-sourced!
