For some reason, I am not able to get mpd to work in conjunction with oss4, and I'm not sure why this is. Doesn't mpd use oss by default? Anyways, here is my /etc/mpd.conf:
# An example configuration file for MPD
# See the mpd.conf man page for a more detailed description of each parameter.

########################## AUDIO OUTPUT ########################
#
# MPD supports many audio output types, as well as playing
# through multiple audio outputs at the same time. You can
# specify one or more here. If you don't specify any, MPD will
# automatically scan for a usable audio output.

################################################################
############################# MIXER ############################
#
# MPD needs to know what mixer settings to change when you

Sorry about the length of that...anyways, I followed what the file's comments said and enabled the OSS settings under the mixer and audio output sections. However, when I try to start mpd, it always fails. Can anyone see a mistake that I've made in my configuration? Thanks.

Do you need to uncomment that part of the audio output section?
Does everything else work btw? Have you configured your default soundcard as described here?:http://4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2358

this is what I use
for the output
audio_output {
type "oss"
name "OSS"
device "/dev/oss/envy24ht0/pcm0"
}
for the mixer
(softoss)
mixer_device "/dev/oss/softoss0/pcm0"
(vmix)
mixer_device "/dev/oss/envy24ht0/mix0"
my soundcard is an maudio 5.1 revolution, so the locations of the files will probably be different for you (unless you use the same soundcard)

Instead of
/dev/oss/envy24ht0/pcm0
I think it should be
/dev/dsp
which is supposed to be linked to the default sound card (mentioned on the page linked in my post above).

it could be /dev/dsp, but I believe such links are set to be deprecated
the proper file locations can be found by running ossinfo

Ah, didn't know that, sorry.

Don't worry guys I fixed it. I just had to take the name of the default audio device from ossinfo, which in my case was /dev/oss/ali54450/pcm0
Also I had to set proper permissions for /var/run/mpd so that my user could access them. So dumb of me

Hi, all.
What should I write in mpd.conf if I want to use volume control in Sonata and headphone output on my Revolution 5.1?

Hi gabell,
Start a new thread. This one is over a year old and not even about the same thing.
