XKB broken?

Recently I've bumped into an XKB problem after upgrading some packages. Not sure which one did it, but it turned out to cause this error:

Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
The X.Org Foundation
60700000

If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

When starting gnome-settings-daemon...

I looked into the problem and found at that xkbcomp was trying to write into /var/tmp, yet it doesn't have permissions to do this.

Is it supposed to be writing there or is the permissions to that directory supposed to be writable by all? Thanks in advance for any help or insight into this matter.

I have this too - I think it's because of xorg and gnome's keyboard layout thing. I have found no solution, though some ppl have (those solutions did not work for me).

Well, I just gave write permission to /var/tmp and the error message vanished (chmod 777 /var/tmp). But I was just wondering if it's supposed be that way. (and if it was that way before and for some odd twisted reason... it stopped being that way)
