Monthly screenshot thread idea

As you've probably seen, every monthly screenshot thread starts out with a post by yettenet outlining the posting guidelines. Problem is, the screenshot he posts for reference is *really* boring, and if you can wrap your eyes around the insane color scheme for the clock at the bottom right, you'll note that it dates back to 2005. It's 3 years old!

So, I gots idea to brighten things up: turn the screenshots thread into an (unofficial) poll! Each month, all the screenshots are looked at and judged to see which one(s) (yes, more than one, since this is unofficial) "win", and the prize is that the coolest one out of the winning group is the shot used for demo purposes the next month.

Just a spur-of-the-moment idea I had a few moments ago, but since those can sometimes be the best....

That's my screenshot I'll have you know! That's my old fluxbox desktop and three years ago that was what a cutting edge custom desktop looked like; before compositing and DEs made fancy desktops something you got out of a box.

I dunno, the cheek of some people...

But seriously, it is massively outdated and does need changing, even if it is my lasting legacy

That was cutting-edge? Bleh. Go back a few more years to the '60s (!!), and mention NLS, which had, and I kid you not, webcam support, hypertext and Wikipedia version 0.0001, and you'll have me drooling.

And yes, I wouldn't mind seeing NLS. In action.

how is one gonna vote unless every body post at the same time? Seems to me you will need to start by deciding who won last months pictures, so they can be the focus of next months thread when Oct 1st rolls around.

There should be a thread to submit your screenshot by a deadline. Then a new thread featuring all the screenshots submitted with a voting system.

Maybe... maybe the deadline could be the close of the month. Halfway into the next month (or however long it takes to decide who won), the winning screenshot is chosen for the *following* month.

Yes, if you followed me correctly, you calculated correctly that this concept means that this month's sample picture is 2 months old. But since this is an *unofficial* poll... I think that 2 months isn't bad it's better than 3 years! *poke*

I nominate Allan's screenshot as the best screenshot of the month. Of course, the situation could escalate. I could make a slurry of other accounts to vote for me, or hire Digg users, or get the CIA/NSA/Al-Qaeda/my mom to force you to give me the prize, or I could convince CERN to destroy the universe if you don't comply.
