I want to cut video clips and stitch them together, and maybe add transition effects. Any suggestions?

Cinelerra is a major program. I wouldn't go there for simple editing unless I was really familiar with it. Avidemux is fairly straight forward if I remember correctly.

I hope the above programs can be used for creating videos as well.

It also depends on what you're trying to do. If you simply want to make a movie out of still pictures, FFmpeg and Mencoder will work perfectly.

I installed kdenlive but can't find it anywhere. It isn't in any menus and typing "kdenlive" in terminal doesn't work.

It may 've been installed into /opt/kde/bin/, that you have to put into your system path. To do that, append /opt/kde/bin/ to your PATH variable in /etc/profile. Then it should be visible. You can also try to run it directly as "/opt/kde/bin/kdenlive", using absolute path.

You probably need to switch to the QT3 configuration. The kdenlive-svn package will have the necessary lines to do it. Then it may fail on FFmpeg. The solution to that is on the 'regular' AUR page.
Avidemux will probably work a whole lot better.

avidemux gave me an error about initializing the sound device.
However, kino seems to work.

I had the same problem when I first installed avidemux. The solution was simple (and easily found on google):
just change your audiodevice to 'default' (edit->preferences->audio->alsa device)

I have played around with a few editors and found kdenlive very good. Lately it has become a pain to build. There is a kommander script that should make things easier http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=85826
I have actually had to go back to kino because of so many build problems and time spent on problems and I must say kino is very effective for simple transitions and effects. Once I got passed the weirdness of the interface I found it easier and quicker to use than kdenlive. If you can get kdenlive to work, then it is probably the better app, if not kino is stable and effective.
