Check /etc/inittab. It determines whether your DM is respawned...or not.

Re: stop x restarting on logout

To run slim is to run X.  Slim is a graphical login manager, requiring X to be running in the background.

Re: stop x restarting on logout

when you logout of say openbox before it goes back to the slim login screen the x server restarts
is there a way to stop it from restarting and just go straight back to slim?

Gdm can do that, but I'm not sure about slim.

Re: stop x restarting on logout

I've been trying to figure out how to get GDM to do that for eons.  Link?

EDIT: Actually, I think I interpreted that post the wrong way the first time I read it.  I've been looking for a way to return to GDM (the login screen) at a specified idle time of, say, 15 minutes.  Having our family computer set up to be used by 5 people, it'd be nice to have it return to the login screen when idle.  I've sat down a few times and my brother had left a pretty racy conversations on the screen that I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted me to read...
