So i logged in today and my sound is no longer working.
All i've done since last night is install Virtualbox & VMware. When i go into sounds and click test, i get the following message
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink: Could not open audio device for playback.
I've tested all the options in sound playback, but this is the error i get when using ALSA.
Any ideas?

Hmmm strange, the sound comes back after 1 or several reboots. First thing this morning i powered on and got no sound, then rebooted and all was fine. Any ideas what could be causing this or how i could diagnose it?
I've tested on other distros and windows to rule out hardware problems btw.

Do you have more than 1 soundcard?
cat /proc/asound/cards
I once had the problem that the card was randomly chosen.
