Hi there.
I set up my box with arch 0.6 (did installation, then reboot)
next step was 'pacman -Sy pacman'
then 'pacman -Su'
then 'pacman -S kde'
it downloaded all, inclusive xorg and xfree86 and then said, the two X's would conflict (which is clear, of course). is the package file incorrect, or what does it mean? it's been like this for a whole week now (first tried last weekend).
thanks for any help

xfree is the predecessor to xorg, I have no idea why you want to install them both at the same time (which is virtually impossible) ;-)

no, i meant:
the packages of the group kde seem to depend on both, xorg and xfree86. that's strange.
as well as it wasn't noticed in a whole week.
some kde package has an invalid dependency list, i guess. haven't had time to look into the problem.

KDE depends on X, not on xfree or xorg

I had the same thing. what I did was install xorg, then install kde

still seems like the deps could be managed better by the kde package tho surely?!

I haven't actually put in the time to figure out if this is a problem with the kde packages or provides in general.
If someone wants to research this and get back to me it could actually be fixed.

I'm new to arch, but my first guess when it happened was that KDE depended on X, and both xorg and xfree86 provide X, and pacman didn't know which to install, letting it to the user to choose.

I didn't want a guess, I wanted research.
I have lots of guesses too you know ;P

when you install gnome group by pacman -S gnome, the same error will happen and stop install. I work around by installing xorg package firstly.

All it is is a dependency issue in the package install script. Arch recently moved accross to Xorg and they haven't updated the package dependencies yet. I'm sure this will be rectified soon with newer KDE/Gnome packages.
Anyway, I just installed Xorg first then Gnome and there were no issues there. 8)
