Really slow harddisk operations

Hey,

When trying to copy files on the same partition (say, from home to /tmp), I get really long
transfer time. Copying a 107 mb file took about 30 (!) seconds.

I think that hdparm shows reasonable times.
Maybe its a defrag problem? (though I am using ext3, which shouldn't need a defrag)

Thanks
fiod

[root@lg-tux /tmp]# hdparm -tT /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 Timing cached reads: 1282 MB in 2.00 seconds = 641.27 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads: 116 MB in 3.00 seconds = 38.66 MB/sec

How full is your hard drive.  Fragmentation becomes a problem on very full drives.  Also, is this a new problem?

Re: Really slow harddisk operations

What are your system specifications like?  What interface does your hard disk use?  Usually, older or laptop hard disks tend to spin at lower RPMs than newer desktop hard disks.  My laptop has a 4200rpm hard disk and it was a drag on Windows.  Of course, it runs pretty nicely on arch, but yes I will admit file transfers are a bit sluggish on this thing.
