I have always been a gamer; it has been my whole reason for ever owning a computer since the Commodore 64.
Unfortunately I have had nothing but disappointment from open source games, and therefore rely on Windows for my gaming needs. Currently, Battlefield 2142 is my game of choice.
I tend to play 1 game exclusively for 1-3 years, until moving onto the next.
So far I have not found ANY open source games that are worth playing for me. I find them all morbidly dated (even if they are "new") and un-engaging. The graphics and gameplay of Tremulous, Nexuiz, and OpenArena are awful, being based on the ancient Quake 3 type engines. Needless to say, I find Enemy Territory woefully dated as well. I like FPS's BTW.
Online play with these games is also spotty.
So then I stumbled across Urban Terror.
The screenshots look decent..though that can be quite deceiving. Has anyone played it? Is it engaging, intriguing?
Is the online play reliable and consistent?
It is not a problem of cost. Obviously, I get my money's worth out of a game since $50 or so over 12-36 months is a bargain even, but if I could avoid dual booting simply for gaming, I'd like to.

You won't be able to avoid dual-booting for gaming. Get over it
Why don't you try Urban Terror for yourself ?
EDIT: I was actually looking at downloading it the other day. Hope to see you online soon.

well, Urban Terror, is an addicting game, is the best I have found so far, when it comes to FPS. I have lots of fun with it, sometimes Ise and I play together just for fun and we enjoy the game so much, I've been playing it for more than 4 months and I'm not tired of it, is always challenging. Wait, is time for me to beat Ise, or be beaten in urbanterror.

My wife and I still enjoy playing Q3 on the LAN. We've gotta custom instagib-style server config with tight maps and a fast rotation...toss a couple of bots in for good measure and things get pretty intense!

I hope so too, Mr. Smartypants! You will pay for your insolence!

Misfit, if you don't want to install the game to test it, you can still check out Youtube for some demo, at least that's what I do.
Anyway, I have played the game for a bit, but I found it boring, perhaps it's not my genre, I prefer more strategic games...

Well, they have been mentioned already. In the FPS realm, I like Tremulous and Enemy Territory, but I'm not a very demanding player, as long as the game is well designed, I enjoy it.

Btw, for anyone else wanting to download Urban Terror to test it out, I'm getting decent speed by using aria2c to combine the torrent and the ftp download (quite slow otherwise):
aria2c -T <torrent file> -s 5 ftp://ftp.snt.utwente.nl/pub/games/urbanterror/UrbanTerror_41_FULL.zip -p --allow-piece-length-change=true
I also added a "--max-upload-limit". The "-p" is necessary for passive ftp.
The torrent file is linked from the Urban Terror's download section and can be found here: http://www.mininova.org/tor/1060264

And then those persons who dual boot criticizes Wine and applications ported to Linux using Wine. Hypocrites.
I'm sorry, what is your point ? Are you calling me a hypocrite ?

Well, it seems pretty good. (I mean, aside from the poor graphics and tuxcart-like jump movements).
We should play sometime. And bring your [Arch] tags with you.

well, look for it, cause I guess we are going to have an Arch team event soon. Don't hold your breath, I'm busy and I always promise too much in the gaming arena and get to do so little. Darn I wish I worked in the gaming industry.

Dude! Urban Terror seriously rocks. It offers a mixture of Counter Strike and Quake Arena like game play.
Its simply one of the awssomest awssome games ever made. Whether Linux, macintosh or windows, I always like to have UrT installed.
You have awesome weapons and there is lots of stratagy and team work involved.
At the end of the day, if you suck at playing it, then BOOM! HEADSHOT!

Well, I could see myself getting into it, but I tend to think that I may long for the realism and modernity of CS:S, BF2142, and the like.
There are some nice aspects to the game, though; interesting choice of weapons, decent maps, good reliance on teamwork, good game modes.
One thing I am not liking is the piss-poor animations of the characters walking and jumping. The skins (especially the horrible looking 'humanoid' faces) are pretty bad too.
I'll have to get used to that stuff, but again, it's a fun game and I enjoyed playing it almost right away.
