Alsa sound issue

First off I'm using a thinkpad 600E. I did get the sound to work properly but I'm pretty sure the permissions are hosed for my normal user. As root zsnes, xmms and everything else sees alsa just fine, as my normal user it's flat out says permission denied.

I've looked and my regular user is a part of the "sound" group. I followed a guide that someone linked here and I've been unable to find the post. here's what the group entry looks like in /etc/group

sound:!:101:user,root

I'm unaware how to look at the permissions for the device itself. Also my regular user is a member of wheel as well. In th interim I can just su and run my emu's but I'd prefer not too for obvious reasons, any advice?

Re: Alsa sound issue

posts like this don't really waste anyones time. typos/fat finger typing actually cause more problems than most will admit

if anything, some will probably revisit their own configs and discover a typo that fixes their problem.
