don't have time to research now, but if i boot with plugged in hdd (firewire) (/dev/sda) while starting hotplug i get a kernel panic (same with kernel26 and kernel26mm):
[damir@Asteraceae ~]$ more /var/log/kernel | grep panic -A4 -B4
Sep 13 14:19:37 localhost kernel: hdf: max request size: 128KiB
Sep 13 14:19:37 localhost kernel: hdf: 0 sectors (0 MB), CHS=0/0/0
Sep 13 14:19:37 localhost kernel: hdf: INVALID GEOMETRY: 0 PHYSICAL HEADS?
Sep 13 14:19:37 localhost kernel: ide-default: hdf: Failed to register the driver with ide.c
Sep 13 14:19:37 localhost kernel: Kernel panic: ide: default attach failed
any ideas?
before last -Suy (mysql, xorg initscripts), this didn't happen, but it worked fine

workaround: no panic, if drive disconnected while start but added afterwards while system fully up
