Hi,
Just bought a printer, it's my first experience with printers on Linux. I followed Wiki as far as it goes, but I've got no idea how to go about drivers. Here there's a lot of info, but I don't know what to do with it. I also know that Samsung ML-1520 driver is the right thing to employ, but I just can't put this information to any use either. Please, help !
I tried Gnome CUPS Manager; it detected the printer indeed, but I just don't know what to tell it when it's asking for drivers.

download rpm driver, unpack and get driver with .ppd extension and add him in gnome-cups-manager

Found splix package (recommended) in the repository. The printer seems to be recognized thoroughly, but there's an error showing:
Status: Ready: /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstoraster failed
Test page won't print.
Any suggestions?
Mind that I am new to the printer itself: I can't guarantee that the cartridge and paper are in their proper places, though I followed the instructions and nothind but a green light is showing ...

Driver Samsung ML-6040 appears to work. The driver installed by Gnome CUPS Manager + everything foomatic (http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Cups).

Hi, I am an Analyst for Xerox. I do machine setups/office integration/network support/virtual filing cabinets/etc.
Here is a link to the official cups .ppds for xerox products:
http://www.support.xerox.com/go/getfile … oad&uType=
Your specific model is not "officially" supported, however you should be able to use the .ppds anyway, probably with good results.
I personally don't do setups on these home printers (ie.3117) because their price:analyst $ make it too expensive... I do setups on $*k + sales.
Did you get the linux printer package from the xerox website?

No. For two reasons:
(1) Everybody says it won't work.
(2) The date on the current Xerox driver doesn't look promising
Date: 2005/06/18
There are two userland solutions:
(1) Samsung drivers (foomatic collection will do), wich worked for me
(2) splix, which didn't

The date you quoted was for some utilities, which personally I wouldn't install anyway (not needed), however the cups printing package in the other link has the most up to date drivers for the most common printers (1/23/2008). I'm not sayin that you should use them, I was only making it known that Xerox does support linux printing on *almost* all of their printers. They even have same day driver support, as well as support for ALL the features of a specific printer.
(1) Everybody says it won't work.
This may be true for your specific model. However, I don't believe *Everything* I hear, or read for that matter.
Also, the more generic HP drivers(postscript) work with almost all Xerox machines (that support postscript), because the way HP writes their driver is very generic to begin with.
Just some info.... take from it what you like.

Thanks!
UPD:
Also Samsung ML-6040 (gdi, recommended) appears to work.
