Im trying to build mplayer with dvdnav support. I have dvdnav-new installed and is the current release. I added --enable-dvdnav to the configure lines in the PKGBUILD from abs.
If i build mplayer with the --enable-dvdnav i get this error:
http://paste.pocoo.org/show/87136/
but if i remove the --enable-dvdnav line then it builds fine but the configure output gives:
Checking for DVD support (libdvdnav) ... no

There's mplayer-dvdnav in the AUR, but it crashes on my computer within 20 seconds of playback. If it doesn't work on your system either, try building mplayer without the patched PKGBUILD in abs. Download the libdvdread, libdvdnav, and mplayer sources from subversion and compile them. Instructions are here. A recent revision failed to build on my machine, but let us know if it works for you. I'm trying again now.
By the way, dvdnav doesn't have complete support for menus yet anyway (e.g. subtitle and audio selection don't work), so you might be better off just using the official Arch mplayer package. You can run
mplayer dvd://1 -dvd-device DEVICE

Just use xine. I mean, really - why fight it

I built mplayer with dvdnav some time back. Try using the svn version of mplayer and libdvdnav. But as mentioned, the support for dvd menus are lacking.
I also recommend totem-xine. It's slim, and can play ISOs directly with menu support.
edit: By slim I mean the gui is very nice/minimal.

try adding the --disable-dvdread-internal option.
