When I start awesome 3, the pointer that shows up is that black arrow, the default one. If I start an application, it'll use the theme I specified on my Xdefault, as it should, but when the arrow is over the background or the statusbar, it comes back to the default one.
Does someone know how to solve this?
TIA

Create and edit the file /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme to read the following (adjusted for your particular cursor theme, of course.
[icon theme]
Inherits=Vanilla-DMZ
Note that this changes it for all users unless it is overridden. Also, there may be some awesome3-specific way to do this (maybe with beautiful?). I vaguely remember seeing something like that, but I can't help you do it that way.

I think putting
xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr &
in my .xinitrc did the trick.
Thanks for the help.

Heh...I posted that, but then removed the post because I thought I misunderstood your situation. Glad that helped though!

Is there another method to try?
I have in .Xdefaults:
Xcursor*theme: Vanilla-DMZ-AA
.xinitrc:
xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr &
I also tried creating /usr/share/icons/defaults/index.theme and ~/.icons/default/index.theme:
[Icon Theme]
Inherits=Vanilla-DMZ-AA
None of these have worked for me. Hopefully someone is still looking at this thread even though it's marked [solved].

(edit: thanks for remarking unsolved)

Is that just a typo or did you accidentally name your directory defaults, with an s, instead of default?

oops, I just checked and that's a typo only in the post. I have /usr/share/icons/default/index.theme and ~/.icons/default/index.theme on the actual system.
