That's weird... Could you run following commands?:
pacman -Qo /etc/profile.d/kde.sh
pacman -Qs kde3-common
pacman -Qs kde3-kdelibs
pacman -Qs kdelibs3
And post the output?
Offline
pacman -Qo /etc/profile.d/kde.sh
/etc/profile.d/kde.sh is owned by kdemod3-kde-common 3.5.10-1
Then I removed kdemod and installed kde3-common again and i get this
pacman -Qo /etc/profile.d/kde.sh
error: failed to read file '/etc/profile.d/kde.sh': No such file or directory
pacman -Qs kde3-common
local/kde3-common 3.5.10-3 (kde3)
Daemon scripts and misc configs for KDE3
pacman -Qs kde3-kdelibs
local/kde3-kdelibs 3.5.10-1 (kde3)

Well, you should start from removing kdemod3 completely
Do you still have any kdemod packages installed? Does the error remain?
KDE3 from my repo uses /etc/profile.d/kde3.sh, and you shoul source this script in your .bashrc file (and .bash_profile, if it doesn't call .bashrc)

I had a problem with the new bluez and kde3-kdebluetoth. kbluetooth server report no device found after upgrading and rebooting. Before the reboot it works. obex works fine.

ok I removed kdemod and put /etc/profile.d/kde3.sh in .bashrc and .bash_profile does call it but I still get the same error.

It seems that hcid have been replaced by bluetoothd and maybe it is incompatible with kdebluetooth 1_beta8.

Great job with kde3 repository ... I was looking for something like that because I have some issues with kde 4.1
However I couldn't install kde3 because of lots of "....... exists in filesystem" errors
for example: kde3-kdelibs: /opt/kde/share/servicetypes/ktexteditor.desktop exists in filesystem
Should I force install?
thanks

sudo rm -rf /opt/kde
As a rule, if you're not sure, you should double-check whenever anyone tells you to "rm -rf" anything, and feel free to do so.
Also you will need to get rid of your ~/.kderc and anything else kde-related...some thigs will work from 3 --> 4 and vice-versa but best to start with a clean slate; you can always get everything back and there are no surprises that way.
If you didn't already know, be sure to do this in runlevel 3; makes life easier.

@gkal: You should just remove kdelibs3 package before you install kde3.

@tanis:

You know the game better than I do but would *just* kde3-libs be responsible for all of them? I'd installed an early kde 3.5.10 and switched back to kdemod once it was upgraded to 3.5.10 (serves me right for being impatient); it took more than just deleting kde3-libs for me (in fact that's how I ended up with all my Control Center and KMenuEdit icons in Lost & Found, as has been mentioned in another thread).
Regardless of what's being uninstalled/reinstalled, unless it's going to eviscerate the entire install, I would recommend a clean-slate approach; YMMV and I certainly won't come right out and say tanis' advice is wrong...

I have no idea what other packages could cause any conflicts.
But for sure kdelibs3 (as well as whole kdemod3) has to be removed before attempting to install kde3.
Also, after that operation some things could be left in /opt/kde (like amarok, or k3b - those apps are still in KDE3 versions).
You surely don't want to remove them by deleting the whole /opt/kde!

not only kdelibs3 has to be removed. I have the same issue with other packages as well. I'm going to remove them one by one and see how it goes. I'll report back here when it's done.
Thank you both for the help.

ok, it works.
However kde3 runs inside kde4 simultaneously. I mean I have 2 panels, kde4 and a smaller of kde3. I used both kdm3 and kdm to start kde.
kdm gives me kde4 login and splash screens but also kde3 runs inside 4 with kde3 style desktop
kdm3 gives me kde3 login screen and kde4 splash screen but kde4 style desktop (with the widgets)
I can run apps from both panels.
Looks little strange! Is this what's supposed to happen? On the other hand everything works fine so far.

@gkal: Which packages did you have to remove?
Did you follow the instructions from the first post of this topic?
Which version of kde3 packages do you have?
What is in you bashrc and bash_profile files?
Offline
I had to remove kdelibs3 and kdebindings.
I did follow the instructions and I have kde 3.5.10 packages installed.
I added the line in bashrc:
alias ls='ls --color=auto'
PS1='[\u@\h \W]\$ '
test -n "$DISPLAY" && export TERM=xterm-color
alias ll="ls -l"
alias rm="rm -i"
alias disks="df -P -h"
export PATH=$PATH:/home/jorge/programs/
export PATH=$PATH:/usr/share/
export OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=kde
. /etc/profile.d/kde3.sh
bash_profile:
. $HOME/.bashrc
didn't touch anything else.
When starting with kdm and choose kde3 session then kde3 only starts. If I start with kdm and choose kde session then I get kde4 look-like desktop (with widgets) and underneath there is kde3 running (I have a 2nd panel). The strange thing is that I can run apps from both panels and dolphin for example reports kde version 4.1.2 but konqueror 3.5.10
I just checked and I don't have kdebindings 4.1.2-1 installed. Obviously I removed it when trying to install 3.5.10. If I try to install 4.1.2-1 now, I get the following error:
error: could not prepare transaction
error: failed to commit transaction (conflicting files)
kdebindings: /usr/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/Qt.rb exists in filesystem
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.

Well, you can't run /etc/profile.d/kde3.sh if you want to use KDE4.
So you should have a separate users for KDE3 and KDE4, or modify your '.bashrc file when changing desktops...
As for kdebindings problem - yes, it looks like kdebindings and kde3-kdebindigs have conflicting files.
I will check if I can fix that.

Thanks a lot, adding the 2nd user with kde3.sh did work.
One last question though, I have a problem with amarok, it doesn't work at all in kde4. I tried to install the version from [extra] repo and not [kde3] but unfortunately it does work only in kde3.
Any advice here?
thanks again

Amarok should work without any problems, with or without kde3.sh, and in both KDE3 and 4.
The version from my repo was just newer than the one available in [extra], but now [extra] is updated as well, so there should be no difference at all.
