Hello everybody.
I have pcmanfm installed and I run it on startup, letting
it manage the desktop.
My problem is that there are no default programs to open
every type of file.
For example, I would like .avi files to be opened with gmplayer.
When I right click on a .avi file and choose gmplayer from the
"Open with" menu, there will no be "Set default for this type of file"
box to check..
Any ides?
Thanks in advance..

No, for some reason it hasn't, that's what I'm talking about.
I know it should though, don't know what's going on.
Btw It is trying to open every type of file with mplayer by default!!

Have you tried right clicking on an .avi file and then selecting properties and choosing your default app that way. I had to do that once with text files as they were always opening with Abiword and I wanted them to use Leafpad. After I did that with one file all the rest started using Leafpad.
But it does sound like you have some mime-type process messing things up, though, or something is wrong with your pcmanfm.

I have the same problem. Some files for some reason doesn't have a checkbox that enables you to set the default program for it, even though it is still possible to "open with another program".
One example of this is img files. Although it clearly says that "File Type To Be Opened: unknown". So the question in my case would rahter be, where do you add filetypes so they are recognised? I beileve that this would solve both our problems and enable us to set a default program.
