[SOLVED] Stop Gran Paradiso from jumping to the Thunderbird desktop.

Hi.  I'm very new.

I thought I knew a bit about Linux after 18 months of Ubuntu, then tried Arch and found that I KNOW
NOOOOTHING....

This will probably be trivial to fix, but I just can't figure it out.

In Ubuntu, I can have Firefox open on one of my four desktops and Thunderbird on another.  When I click links in a Thunderbird email, they open in Firefox, and it stays over on its own desktop.  So I can click several links, then go over to the Firefox desktop and look through the tabs.

In Arch, every time I click on a Thunderbird link, Firefox jumps over to the Thunderbird desktop and covers Thunderbird up.  This means I have to keep manually dragging it back to its original desktop.

It's not a big deal, but it's annoying - if anyone can tell me how to fix it, I'll be grateful!

(Then I'll be back about wireless - after 2 weeks I still haven't got my card to work... But I wanna try a few more things over the weekend before I pester you about that.)

BTW, INCREDIBLE distro.  I've learned more about Linux in 2 weeks of Arch than I did in nearly 2 years of Ubuntu.

Hi and welcome to arch!
This is most likely a window manager/desktop environment thing, so all the info related would help. I assume you're using gnome, but in any case, please tell us more. (I don't use gnome myself, so there's not much I can do to help with it). You might also want to check your thunderbird preferences for the browser and how it is launched?

Re: [SOLVED] Stop Gran Paradiso from jumping to the Thunderbird desktop.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, I'm using Gnome.

I suspect this is just going to be a matter of simply clicking on some preference setting somewhere, but I've hunted everywhere and can't find anything that does it.

OTOH, I was a little surprised that a Google search didn't find the problem anywhere, so maybe it's going to be a lot harder to fix than I suspected.

there is no desktop environement issue. this "issue" appear after upgrading firefox from 2 to 3.

Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

That's wierd. I've had no problems with claws-mail launching firefox '%s'. It always ends up opening a new tab on (an existing) browser window without moving my firefox anywhere. Firefox greps the focus though, so could it be that gnome moves the "focusGrepped" window on top of the current desk?

I dunno if it's Gnome or update related in my case - I still have Firefox 3 on a Ubuntu machine, also with Gnome, and clicking on TBird doesn't move Firefox.  But it's happening on both my Arch machines.

Re: [SOLVED] Stop Gran Paradiso from jumping to the Thunderbird desktop.

This fixed it for me a while back:

Enter about:config in the location bar of Firefox.
Change browser.tabs.loadDivertedInBackground to true

That did the job!  MANY thanks - I would never have figured that out by myself.

Much appreciated, and I hope my first forum question is actually helpful to other people too!

(now... back to that wireless card...)
