Hi guys.
A friend of mine bought a notebook last week: an Hp Compaq 6715b.
Here are the specs:
CPU: AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile TL-60
RAM: 2,5 GB DDR II
VGA: ATI Radeon X1250
Here is a link with all the specifications: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm … 68540.html
I installed Arch Linux for him but now he is suffering a strange problem with video playback.
Whenever he tries to play an avi or vob after a few seconds the playback become choppy and the video skips.
This happen with every player: VLC, SMplayer, Mplayer.
I noticed that in KDE System Monitor, I got this for memory:
543.00 MiB / [nothing]
Is it relevant?

Thanks I will try it.
Now, can you explain me what is the "nopat" option about?
I tried to search it on the internet without success.

I solved part of the problem: now the playback doesn't hiccup anymore.
I achieved this result by reinstalling the official Ati Drivers ( Catalyst 8.5 ).
But now I got some flickering during playback. I tried the "nopat" solution but it didn't help.
Any ideas?

sorry but i don't have a solution. I also get flickering when using kde 4 with transparancy. If turned off there is no problem.

Thanks kendosperling for the nopat option, it solves my problem about choppiness of videos.
With a composite manager and fglrx (Catalyst driver) you get flickering of videos if your video engine is set to opengl. Use xshm instead. Other opengl apps like googleearth will flicker unless you display it at fullscreen mode (I mean real fullscreen: if you still see your taskbar, click on the opengl screen).

I'm having the same problem. How do I change the video engine?

I'm using a french translated version of vlc, but I'll try to guide you.
Open vlc, go to "tools->settings->video: you will see a drop down menu called maybe output or engine, set it to X11. Open a video files and see the result.

For me it was a bit different but I was able to find the option. Thanks arabis.
