Start menu in Linux

I was reading about a Windows user who was using launchy for controlling his system then he started using Start menu just be hitting Windows key and typing what he needed to run

I assume you can do the same in Linux? tie Windows key [I know it hurts me to use it too!!]

Would you run gmrun? open a term like tilda

looked at Gnome-Do but its huuuuugeee!!!

Re: Start menu in Linux

I believe that feature has been built into KDE for a long time. Of course in E17, ALT+Esc+typing.

Re: Start menu in Linux

I'd go for dmenu. I'm currently using it in combination with xmonad.
Back when I was a DE user I always used gmrun for that purpose,
but after discovering xmonad I'll never go back. I love it! Anyway,
you shoud try both and then make a decision, OR bind them both
to different keys. smile

Btw, gnome-go seems kinda nice, I've never heard of it untill now
actually.

Edit: For some reason I typed dzen2 instead of dmenu. hmm

Re: Start menu in Linux

Gnome-do may even be huge, but it's much more than a simple launcher. Check out all its plugins, it's very flexible/extensible.

Take a look at launchy much lighter, though it may not have as many plugins as gnome-do [which is huuuge!!!]

Re: Start menu in Linux

For the DEs like gnome, kde and exfce there's of course the simple alt+F2. And as mentioned, the excellent alt+esc feature in e17.

In KDE4, alt+F1 opens the menu and there you can also just type in the program you're looking for.

Re: Start menu in Linux

`dmenu_path | dmenu -b -nb '#000000' -nf '#ffffff' -sb '#ffffff' -sf '#000000'` && eval "exec $exe"

Bind this and enjoy wink

Re: Start menu in Linux

I use the windows key in many other shortcuts - for example, Ctrl+Win opens a terminal, Alt+Win opens Emacs, and so on.

Re: Start menu in Linux

I use the logo key in all my WM-related bindings since it's the only one that will never interfere with application shortcuts, so that's not really an option. But W-F1 for my Openbox menu and W-F2 for gmrun are enough for me.
