Hi guys I'm using Arch linux about two months and I see that many people get more fps than me with the same card (FX 5200).
My PC config is:
AMD DUron processor 1.8 Ghz
Nvidia FX 5200 128 MB AGP 8X
Motherboard PCCHIPS M810 v 7,1a
HD IDE 80 GB.
Sound Blaster live! 32 Bits
512 MB RAM. 512 MB of swap.
This is my lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)
and pacman -Q | grep -i nvidia
nvidia-173xx 173.14.12-1
nvidia-173xx-utils 173.14.12-1
And this is my glxgears output:
glxinfo | grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
2249 frames in 5.0 seconds = 449.762 FPS
2319 frames in 5.0 seconds = 463.681 FPS
2315 frames in 5.0 seconds = 462.875 FPS
2327 frames in 5.0 seconds = 465.232 FPS
I think that is not enough FPS that my video card can do, anybody have anything to up the performance of my nvidia?

GLXGears should not be used to benchmark I have 8800gt 512mb, and my output is:
~ > glxgears
9979 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1995.762 FPS
10707 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2141.353 FPS
10561 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2111.384 FPS

Indeed. Don't trust glxgears. My 7800GT has this results:
65135 frames in 5.0 seconds = 13026.812 FPS
65160 frames in 5.0 seconds = 13031.942 FPS
65122 frames in 5.0 seconds = 13024.328 FPS
What does this mean? Nothing. Of course a Geforce 7 is not 6 times faster than the 8 series. :-)

How did you get it that fast?

My 6800 says
43657 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8731.388 FPS
42953 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8590.477 FPS
42537 frames in 5.0 seconds = 8507.348 FPS
I mean, it is obvious, but did you start nvidia-xconfig and nvidia-settings? Which environment do you have?
Best regards,
Martin

all from one session. playing with the glxgears window. turning off composite etc....btw this is on a nvidia fx 5500.

Nothing. I just opened a konsole in kde and typed in glxgears. But as I said: this does not mean anything. Better check with some games like nexuiz etc..

PS: if anybody tell me how to put [SOLVED] to post title I thanks.
