networking problem on Arch linux in virtualbox on windows vista host

Hi everyone,
I am a newbie of Arch linux (or you can say I am a newbie of linux) from Hong Kong (Asia).
In these few days I tried to installed Arch linux as a guest OS in virtual box 2.0.2 on a windows vista home basic host machine.

The configuration of the host is:
CPU - Intel Centrino 2 P8600
RAM - 2GB DDR3 1066MHz
Display - Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
Wireless card - Intel WiFi Link 5300AGN

And the guest OS setting is:
RAM - 512MB
Harddisk space - 8GB
Network connection - NAT (default)

I downloaded archlinux-2008.06-core-i686.iso and performed the installation.
Everything is fine.

However, after I finished the installation,
and tried to synchronize the pacman database, the network connection is extremely slow (~1-2kb/s),
I used about 10 mins to download all the core, extra and community database
I tried to change the squence of the ftp mirror in the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist, but still no changes.

So I installed wget trying to increase the download speed (downloading the wget and the related packages took me about fifteen minutes)
It increased a little bit (~ 4-5 kb/s) but I found that the network connection seems to paused for a few minutes every several minutes.

Is there any ways I can increase my downloading speed?

And the problem of the pause of network connection,
how can I figure out if it is the problem of the virtual machine or the problem of connection between my machine and the mirror sites?
(I found that there is no official mirror site in Asia.... and I don't know which mirror would be better for me)

Sorry for my poor english, and thanks for the help smile
